Tense and chilling. What would you do if you realized 1) your kid is a psychopath and 2) you hate him? What are your responsibilities to your kid and to others? The whole movie revolves around this, the protagonist’s realization as to what her kid is and what results. It hurts to watch this motherly paradox. The kid flips a switch and mimics being a perfect son to the dad and then turns to the mom and says horrible cold things like “Just because you’re used to something doesn’t mean you like it” referring to how he knows she sees him. The film came out well before this NY Times article on psychopaths, but it’s really a must read companion piece – the stories in that article are so similar to how the movie plays out, it makes the movie feel even more authentically rendered. Tilda Swinton does great work as the mom, but the boy is just perfectly cast, so uncomfortable to watch a ruthless and cold child. Spoiler: Instead of Chekhov’s gun, this movie features Chekhov’s bow & arrow set.
Two Shots Note: Follow me if you love movies or want to start. I take movies and turn them into just two shots which may or may not be representative of the movie but hopefully comprise a new, visually interesting repurposing of the movie. I add variable amounts of commentary and strive to be spoiler-free. I LOVE movies and I hope each post can be a jumping off point for someone to try a new movie out.
I am looking forward to a long, beautiful Steeming experience as I get the hang of this medium. I am the process of deprecating my Tumblr blog (evidence is here). So follow me or even better, reply with comments and movie recommendations. Thanks!
