Day 10 - Who is your favorite director?
Answer: Quentin Tarantino
I don't think there's a single film in Quentin Tarantino's filmography that I don't like. There's just something about his style of film making that is right up my alley. His use of dialogue is interesting. I like that he writes his characters like they're real people. They don't always have to talk about what the film's plot is. Sometimes there will just be scenes of characters talking about some random topic like the ethics of tipping your waiter/waitress and it's great insight on who the characters are as people. It has nothing to do with the film's plot, but everything to do with creating interesting and unique characters. I'm always looking forward to what Tarantino's next film might be.
Here's a quick list of the films Tarantino has directed:
- Kill Bill: Volume 1 and Kill Bill: Volume 2 tell the tale of a woman's revenge on the team of assassins who tried to kill her and her unborn baby in an amazing send up to revenge martial arts films.
- Reservoir Dogs was a brilliant film with interesting characters in a heist movie where the job goes horribly wrong.
- Pulp Fiction is an absolute classic of the crime genre it is replicating. I would say it is probably Tarantino's most popular film.
- Jackie Brown is a blaxsploitation film based on the Elmore Leonard novel Rum Punch and tells the story of a flight attendant who smuggles money from Mexico into the United States.
- Inglorious Basterds is a war film that spins a fictional alternate history two separate plots to kill Adolph Hitler during World War II.
- Django Unchained tells the tale of a slave turned bounty hunter who is trying to locate his wife in a spaghetti western type of film.
- The Hateful Eight pits eight different characters in a cabin together during a snow storm post American Civil War and tensions run high.
- Death Proof was the Tarantino half of the Grindhouse feature collaboration with Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror. The film is about a stuntman who lures unsuspecting women into his 'death proof' car and kills them in staged car accidents.
I'm looking forward to whatever he has in store for us in the future. I know there's been talks of him wanting to adapt the Brett Easton Ellis novel Less Than Zero. I think there's the possibility of him being a part of a new Star Trek film in the J.J. Abrams version. I know he's got some movie called Once Upon a Time in Hollywood that's supposed to be slated for a 2019 release date. Whatever the next Tarantino film may be, I'll be eagerly awaiting to see what it is.
