As family, it is our primary obligation to protect our siblings. Sometimes we go a long way to make sure family members get the happiness they deserve. But sometimes though or intentions are right, the outcome may be tragic.
Here's a story.
FEBRUARY 14 1997
It was a Friday and as usual everywhere was busy and filled with activities. Neighbors from the next block playing music out so loud I felt like calling the police. In my city, Valentine's Day is not a public holiday so we had to go about our normal activities. I was 20years old but I didn't have a girlfriend, only classes by 12pm that day so I wasn't thinking of going out with anybody even though I would've loved to.
I didn't have the nerves to ask Sophie my crush cos I felt she wouldn't like a nerd like me.
I had two sisters but Janet was my favorite, we always got along and I loved her. We could talk about anything, Janet is one person that I could trust with my darkest secrets. So many times she had covered up for me when I did something wrong. She was the girlfriend I never had..
I was about tying my shoe lace when I heard a knock on my door. It was Jane, she brought me a Valentine gift. She said she knew I wasn't going to get one, I smiled and hugged her.
Janet then gave me that innocent look as if she ws going to cry and said 'Hey Sam I need a favour. Janet knows hot to get something from me, in fact, she's one person I couldn't say no to and coupled with the gifts, it was a one way ticket to my heart.
What's that? I replied.
She told me she was going out with her boyfriend and wouldn't be coming back that day and that I should tell our parents that were going out together and wouldn't be coming back that night. Without thinking about it, I said okay cool, just be safe.
i was in college and I lived in school, only come home often.
Before leaving the house I told our parents and they approved it. That night we went to my place and by 7:30pm her boyfriend came over to pick her up. He told me they drop her off by 9pm and I agreed.
Have fun Jane, don't do anything stupid - I said as they drove off.
It was 10:15 and they weren't back. I called Jane couple of times but it got to her mail. Her boyfriend's number wasn't going through either. I was worried.
I couldn't call my parents to inform them, no, it wasn't going to help
So I drove off to the restaurant where they said they were going to, but there was no trace LG them anywhere. So I assumed they must have gone to his house. I went home and fell asleep hoping to call her by morning .
At 12:30am I heard a knock on my door, when I went to check, I saw two police officers standing there. My heart sank.
Are you Samuel Williams? The brother to Janet Williams? YYYes I am I said as I struggled to keep my composure.
They told me my sister was involved in an auto crash and she's being hospitalized you can come with us to the hospital . I couldn't hold the tears in my eyes.
I immediately turned to get my jacket and then my phone rang. It was my mom.
