What would it be like if in the future, social and economic status would affect the quality of life of the people and nobody could interfere with that? This is one of the main points in the film "Elysium" directed by Neill Blomkamp (District 9), starring the ranks of famous artists such as Matt Damon and Jodie Foster.
Elysium which has been released in our homeland since last Sunday at IMAX and yesterday in 2D cinema is a science fiction film that takes the theme of Earth condition in the future. Director Blomkamp admits that the film is more than just another science fiction movie. He said that Elysium is depicted based on the current state of the Earth. What does the story look like?
Like Heaven and Earth
Elysium took the Earth's setting in 2154, where this year Earth's life changed due to the population as well as the excessive levels of pollution. War, disease, and even poverty occur on Earth. In the end, there are two social statuses formed over the event. The elite who has wealth both economically and socially decided to move to a space colony called Elysium, where it is the home of everybody's dreams in the world. While those who can not afford, must be willing to live on Earth that has been polluted and only able to dream to live in Elysium sometime in the future.
Max Da Costa (Matt Damon) is an orphan who also has a dream to live in Elysium. Max also promised to Frey (Alice Braga), his friend at the orphanage, to take him there someday. But slowly, he began to forget his dream of living in Elysium until an event changed his mind. Max was dying after an accident at the factory where he worked and only had five days to stay alive. The only way to be able to heal itself is by using a capsule that can only be accessed in Elysium.
In depression to stay alive, Max asks for help to Spider (Wagner Moura) to send himself to Elysium. Instead of being able to gain access to Elysium, Max must comply with Spider's demand while using an exoskeleton outfit that will unite with Max's body to improve his physical abilities. Not only to improve the physical alone, the clothing is also equipped with data transfer tools that will be very useful when running the mission of the Spider. To succeed the mission, Max has to deal with several antagonists such as Kruger (Sharlto Copley), secret agent of Elysium Defense Agency Secretary Jessica Delacourt (Jodie Foster).
Max to run a mission from Spider to get tickets to Elysium as he wants? Will Max finally be able to grant his promise to Frey to take him to Elysium? Everything will be revealed in the movie "Elysium"!
One of the strengths of the Elysium film is the theme that is raised. The year setting taken in this film is about 150 years in the future, but the description taken is based on the picture of the social situation happening in our society today. Elysium gives the point of view when status and wealth are everything, and those who do not have it have no right to be able to get what they want. As a result, the situation becomes divided into social caste that tend to be unfair and full of conflict. However, no one dared to stop the system unless someone dared to advance first. And this is what is to be delivered indirectly to the audience.
The fascinating theme of the science fiction theme is supported by the characterization of its influential characters. It can not be denied that the line of artists involved in the film "Elysium" is able to show his acting skills well, resulting in a picture of the nature and behavior of different human social caste as it should be. However, the storyline shown in this film tends to be short and not all of them get digged deeper. So there are some story lines that look less hit because of lack of a more complete explanation.
Action that highlighted enough to trigger the adrenaline audience. Various action scenes that occurred were also dramatized with slow motion that makes the action scene becomes more stressful and has a level of detailed damage. But not infrequently the extent of damage generated in some battle scenes or action is likely to be brutally unnecessary, thus making some action scenes look too much.
Although still has some shortcomings, the film "Elysium" with the theme of the story is quite realistic with our social situation at this time can still entertain as well as one of the must watch film for this year.
