“You know…” she said in a soft, soothing voice.

“You are a great guy.”

“And I am sure any girl would be lucky to have you.”

He raised his head to look at her beautiful, radiant face shining in the neon lights. He was lost, watching her deep brown eyes.

He wasn’t paying any attention to what she was saying.

He loved when she spoke. He would always pay attention to what she was saying but not today. He knew it was over and this was the last time he was going to be so close to her. His mind was about to press the panic button, but his heart was in a trance.

“But…’ she said.

But, there’s always a but and butts always spoil the mood.

“But… I can’t marry you.”

The second “but” had given him a moment worth of hope. Hope is an emotional word for dopamine, the chemical produced in our brains that give us kicks and pleasure.

“I need more dopamine,” he thought.

“And… right now she needs oxytocin.” Oxytocin hormone, the love drug, produced when people hug or when people feel loved.

“Are you even listening to me? I’ll head home. It’s raining out there.” She said abruptly, breaking his chain of thoughts.

“Yes, yes I am listening.’

He saw her one last time as she walked towards the taxi.

He hoped she would turn back one more time and smile.

Hope is a strong sentiment sold by greeting card companies and Bollywood movies.

She was gone.

The dopamine in his brain was wearing off. His mind slowly started to grasp the reality. The sharp smile on his face slowly melted away and was replaced with a confused expression.

“She is gone,” he said to himself.

He took a deep breath and exhaled.

As he settled in his chair, sinking into the harsh reality, for the first time, he felt a strong pain in his chest.

He stood up and walked into the rain. No one could see him cry.

P.S: This is the first part of the story. If I get a good response from you guys, probably if get a hundred Upvotes I will post the second part and who know I will keep on writing rest of the story.
