#41: Banana Slug - Party?

“Are you going to the party?” Marc and Captain stuck their heads into the Wizard’s keep one day. It had been relocated and rebuilt when all the other buildings had their roofs removed. The piles of rubble were gradually being fed to Molecular Furnaces and thence to the many SmokeForges.

“What party?” Shelby responded. He was concentrating intently on what looked like a big EGG. Marc and Captain knew better than to ask. Some things they just did NOT want to know. Their motto was leave the wiz alone. His biz was HIS biz..if he needed help he’d ask.

The other Maggi and the Daemons had been involved in strengthening the Banana Slug . For the last few weeks they had all let their social lives lapse. There was a lot of information available that might apply in the SoulStone but it was taking awhile to sort it out, as Shelby knew all TOO well.

“It’s a celebration of sorts. Some of the young kiddos got their first deer.” Captain said “They’re hunters now.”

“Well that’s wonderful” Shelby said “I recall getting my first buck. I was very proud.”

“Me too “ Marc said.“My that’s been a long time ago. It was on the Rez.”

“These guys did it with a virtual reality rig and an avatar, but meat is meat.” Captain said

Of course there was Carl.


“Carl got a cow?” Shelby asked. “Color me not surprised. Sometimes I think that boy marches to the beat of a different Calliope.“

“Oh he didn’t kill it” Captain said “He captured it alive. Somehow. I’m not really sure how he managed to do that actually, something about an eel I heard. I imagine that I’d be shocked if I did.”

“He didn’t limit himself to just cows either.” Marc was laughing. “he got sheep too,


and chickens,

and who knows what the hell else.

That boy was a whole gang of rustlers all by his own self. It’s amazing what people left behind to die.”

“Don’t blame just him.” Captain laughed. “I think that drifter you picked up a while ago had more than a little to do with it.”

“You mean Wilbur?” Shelby asked.

“Yeah Him.” Captain agreed. “He and Carl seem like two peas from one pod. Wilbur’s just older.”

“That’s scary” Marc said

“That it is.” Shelby agreed. “How are they maintaining the animals?”

“I’m not sure.” Marc said “Remember that this used to be a rural community. Horses and goats and cows were nothing unusual when it was built. People kept livestock. They just fell out of favor over time. There’s still pasture here and there and many of the old barns and other live stock accommodations still exist. Carriage houses and such. Carl knows this.”

“May we live in interesting times” Shelby said.

it's hard to tell what’s true or when they are lying isn’t it? It seems that they are more interested in influencing public opinion than they are reporting the facts.
