Food Fight Friday - Scents and Sentimentality

in #fff5 years ago (edited)

The sweet smell of bread baking or Mom's Sunday roast greeting you as you open the door certainly makes for very fond memories of childhood days not so!

My uncle Cornel who lived abroad did this painting of me from a school photo Mom sent across.

I remember coming home after school and being the oldest and only girl with four brothers, I was a tad molly-coddled and Mom often kept a little treat aside for me. All our friends would come and play at our house as their Moms did not bake bread; many hands flew out the door with thick slices of hot bread with butter melting and we would play all afternoon till it was time for homework.

Those were carefree days; school time, play time, homework or studying time and sitting around the table as a family and enjoying dinner together.

Roast Chicken dinner with creamy Potato Bake, Broc-Cauli-Kale Fritters and Gem Squash with Sweetcorn which was Monday's meal.

Back then, we did not have television here in South Africa and in the evening before bedtime, we'd all sit around the radiogram to listen to the radio dramas - and were they good at telling stories using their voices, sound effects and music; you had to really use your own imagination and form pictures in your mind:)
Everyone was catered for on the radio - Children's stories, Documentaries, Game Shows, Comedies, Music, Dramas and even Soapies; yep that's where it all started!

Anyone out there who grew up with one of these taking pride of place in the living room?

All I wanted when I was growing up, was to be grown-up and not to have to go to school, do homework and learn for those dreaded tests and exams!
Oh boy, what a let-down when you reached adulthood but then long for those carefree childhood days! Were you the same?

Tuesday night's dinner was Macaroni & Savoury Mince Cheese
I know I've been waffling on about all kinds of scents and memories but one that we're all really enjoying here at the moment, is the scents of summer on its way - Jasmine and Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow are both blooming and giving the most heavenly and heady scents especially after dusk.

The garden really is coming alive with colour again, yep it will soon be summer in the southern hemisphere. Our Camellia is full of flowers and really looking ever so pretty!

A while back I threw some Vine Tomatoes that were past the sell-by-date into the herb garden and look what I found the other day; so now we're hoping they will ripen before the monkeys get to them!

Wednesday night was really chilly, we heard there was snow on the tops of the Drakensberg mountain range, which is approx two and a half hours from us, but the chill reaches us here with icy winds.
What better to warm the cockles than a hearty Beef & Veg Casserole served with fresh fruit and a little Sweetie Pie as an after dinner mint;)

Thursday night was a lazy dinner - Sausage & Mash served with a sweet & sour Onion Sauce & Marrows not Peas, but the plates were wiped clean afterwards.

So Friday night came and I think you've gathered by now that I'm not in the fighting mood so am flying my peace banner with a Fish & Chips takeout dinner and will watch the Food Fight Friday aka #fff action from afar.

Our esteemed refs and ring judges @dandays, @idig and @jlsplatts, it's all up to you guys now to see all's fair in love and war or am I getting confussed here? These names are so difficult to pronounce never mind the spelling!

Your post is making me hungry! And my dinner is in the oven - sadly a shop-bought quiche, as I agree that nothing can beat home cooking, and I really try to make my own meals from natural ingredients as much as possible!
That radiogram unit certainly brings back memories - probably from visiting friends' homes. I don't think our family had one.
I have to say I don't miss childhood much, even though it was mostly pretty happy. But I was ill a lot, seriously ill in my younger childhood. And I hated school. I've always been an independent soul, so I couldn't wait to get out and start earning and living my own life!

Gosh and look at you now, climbing every mountain or rock you can find, I'm so glad you've overcome all the childhood illnesses @natubat! Thank you for stopping by:)

Thanks @lizelle! I was just saying to my mum the other day, that being so ill as a child has given me an extra determination to be as strong and healthy as possible now!

Ohh yes we had something similar with the record player/radio when I was growing up and that photo did bring back memories,
and Fish and chips used to be our regular friday night meal, although I had hot dogs and chips mostly and often a pineapple fritter, I dont often have them here they just do mnot make them like back in NZ growing up here

I've never had pineapple fritters, now you've made me curious @tattoodjay! Glad this brought back memories my friend, thanks for stopping by:)

Ohh they were nice I think the last time I had them was on my last trip back to NZ about 10 years ago

Have a Super Sunday

Good Luck

Have a
!BEER

Thank you but with all the food in the ring I will end up in a permanent food coma;)

growing up comes with responsibilities.... and who in their right mind wants those LOL I really could go back and be a kid again, that would be fun. Go back with the knowledge you have today and have an absolute blast. lol Just as I started thinking about this, my attention was drawn away to all those many delectable dishes. WOW!!! Happy Food Flingin'

Thank you so much @jlsplatts, if only we knew then what we know now;)

That belt sure does look good one you. I originally had ‘you sure look good in that belt,’ but went with the first sentence you just read instead.

Always a pleasure to hang out with you @lizelle, especially on Fridays. Food fight’s pretty cool, huh? I hear they even let some people make their own hours.

Have a great weekend chef!

Oh but you have a wicked sense of humour Mr Dandays, thought I was sneaking into the sidelines unseen;) Didn't they tell you the fight was delayed due to unforeseen circumstances, whatever that may mean.
The fff crew are a forgiving bunch though and have never closed the door in anyone's face;);) You have an open door policy or what;)?
Thank you for keeping a spot for me, Fridays always catch me unawares:)

Nothing like the smell of homemade bread baking in the oven. All of your dishes look so appetizing. You can keep the pictures of spring flowers coming our way, as we enjoy the last ones around here. They are slowly dying off as they get ready to rest as colder temperatures are right around the corner.

Thank you so much @thebigsweed, everything is blossoming at the moment, the jasmine has even more flowers now so you can imagine the scent is even stronger now! Thanks for popping in:)

We were expecting some frost last night, and brought a lot of the flowering plants inside. Maybe we can get a couple more weeks of their beauty by moving them in and out, depending on the temperature. @lizelle, I can almost smell the jasmine from here.

Hello there @lizelle, sorry I haven't had a chance to read your #fff post, been so busy bringing in the last of our #veggies and #herbs from the gardens. If I don't get this produce now, all it would take is one frost and I would lose most of it.
It is fall here in Upstate Ny and it's been known to happen, a sudden drop in temperature over night.
Your food looks so delicious, as usual. You must be excited to see some flowers blooming, I know that's why spring here is so much fun, all of a sudden some early bloomers will pop up, puts smile on my face.
Enjoy your day...again nice entry.

Thank you so much @farm-mom, I can just imagine how busy you've been especially after seeing the posts you and @thebigsweed have done!

Hey @lizelle, thanks for dropping by. Yes we have been so busy lately preparing for the cold months we know are coming our way. But we both try to keep up with our steemit friends. You happen to be at the top of my list, so I will try always to stay in touch. Peace my friend, enjoy your weekend.

Ah thank you @farm-mom, peace to you as well! I'm so glad to have met you here thanks to #fff.
We're fortunate with gorgeous mild winters but I'm not looking forward to the hot and extremely humid months! Wish we could have spring or even winter all year long! The months of Jan to early March are just unbearable.
My nephew lives in Minnesota and finds the winters real harsh, he's a pilot with Sun Country Airlines. We really miss him! Sounds like your winters are also harsh.

Oh yes, our winters can be verrrrrry cold. Last year on our way to Florida in late January, we left NY STATE @ minus 9 degrees, that's exactly why we go south in the winters. It's a nice break.

I remember when my grandma was cooking the chicken that way and not just parts of it, it was the best feeling in my childhood :)
Thanks for helping me remember about priceless moments <3

I'm so glad this brought back good memories, a whole roast chicken certainly tastes better than cooking pieces, thank you!
