In Defense of New York Fashion Week: F/W 2018 Best Of

in #fashion7 years ago

I feel like everywhere you look lately in terms of fashion news major outlets are talking about the decline of American Fashion and the relevance of New York Fashion Week. With designers like Rodarte (one of my favorites) along with a handful of others leaving the NYFW calendar to show in Paris cries of the beginning of the end have gotten louder.

But, for how long have we really been hearing this?

The relevancy of NYFW really came into question around the end of the Great Recession (2007 – 2012). With customers becoming more mindful of their purchases and designers grasping with what to send down the runway that will provoke the emotions of their customers to still buy into their particular breed of style.

When you compare the collections that come down the runway at New York in comparison to Paris or Milan there is usually something left lacking but, I would argue that for Fall/Winter 2018 American designers really upped their game or newly appointed Creative Directors and young designers came through for the style deprived States.

Here I’ve compiled some of my favorite looks from four of my favorite shows that really make the argument that American fashion is on the rise.

  • Marc Jacobs first debuted his namesake collection in 1986.

  • For Raf Simmons second season at Calvin Klein he sent models down a runway of popcorn in pastels and hazmat suits to create a post apocalyptic Americana feel.

  • Coach brought in British designer Stuart Vevers in 2013. Tasked with bringing back the brand back to relevancy and achieved this goal he has! Coach continues to surpass sales expectations with Vever's repositioning of the Ready-to-Wear line.

  • Jeremy Scott's Harajuku-Barbie-esque show aesthetic wouldn't have been the same without his make-up collaboration with MAC Cosmetics and candy colored bobbed wigs by Eugene Souleiman. #MANICPANIC on deck!!

I am really into seeing more of the fashion community here on steemit!

ohhh girl. Those pink eyebrows in Jeremy Scott's are giving me inspiration for when I have grey hair... pink eyebrows are def a possibility!

ooph I love how rich the Marc Jacobs collection jewel tones are, and the sumptuous materials. Mm!
I've been on Steemit since late December and am just starting to find people talking fashion on here. I never even bothered with a fashion hashtag as I figured it was a waste of a tag! Glad to have found you and @taylerworrell and others! I have lots of exploring to do! Cheers!

@caitycat

Marc Jacobs is always so magical!

He was one of the very first major designers I ever started following before I even knew I wanted to work in fashion. @taylerworrell and I both have been trying to find other like minded fashion lovers on here so if you have any follow recommendations I'm sure we'd both love to hear them!
