ANIMAL LABOUR IN FARMLANDS

As we all know farmlands are land used for farming and also very beneficial to the farmers,also animals are useful on the farm too. Farms are businesses that raise and take care of animals. While farmers are busy with their businesses on farm,animals too grow food. Some grown foods on farms are food to these farm animals and other food are sent to feed people. When you visit a farm,you might meet different animals such that lives there such as cows,goats,sheep,horse, chickens, donkeys and pigs. These animals also help with work on the farm but sometimes farmers make use of machines to work on farms.

Let us talk about these animals and their uses on the farm

COWS

Cows are raised for milk or beef in the farm, these cows are milked two to three times in a day and this milk is use for sale. Farmers will feed these cows with grains so that they will look healthy and be able to produce lots of milk. A cow eat like 100 pounds of food every day and also drinks if not more than 50 gallons of water. They are well taken care of so that they will become healthy and sometimes, they leave them to roam in pastures during the day. The young cows which are cattles are not milked,so the farmers will leave them so they can become big and strong animals and they sleep in the barn on the farm

Farmers also raise pigs and they are kept indoors for proper care to keep them healthy. A male pig is always called a "boar" while the female one is called "Sow'. The average pig can grow to a weight of about 600 and 900 pounds but there are some that weighs as much as 1000 pounds. They take care of them and also water them, and they grow to become healthy. When pigs have become so big and old enough,the farmers will sell them at the market.

Farms also have chickens that are kept for either eggs or meat. These chickens that stays on farm should be provided with a poultry to keep them safe from dangerous animals. Chickens do stay healthier and are happy had it been they have where to be wandering outside the farm. They like to scratch and forage that is why farmers give them enough time and place with mulch on the ground. Female chickens are called " Hens" and will produce eggs while the farmers will collect them. The male chickens are called "Roosters". The hen and the rooster will come together and mate and then produce eggs for the farmers

Horses on a farm probably may live in a pasture or live in a stable. Horses living in a stable are well taken care of by the Farmers but the best place horses like is to live in a pasture because they see it as natural setting for them.

Sheep are raised for wool,also farmers provide them with hay or grass to feed on and a lot of fresh and clean water to drink. Sheep needs special minerals that will keep them healthy. They are usually kept in a barn to sleep and farmers leave them to run during the day in a pasture

Goats are raised for milk by farmers,they eat grass and drinks clean water for the whole day. Goats spend their time in a fenced pasture and the farmers milk them two times a day that is, morning and night

Farmers prefer donkeys because they are used to guard the farm, the reason is that they often feel protective of other farm animals. They may resemble horses but they both have different needs and behaviors. They are also friendly personality

IMPORTANCE OF ANIMAL LABOUR IN FARMLANDS

  • They provide hides and skin for the production of leather bags,shoes etc

  • They are good source of protein like eggs,meats,milk etc

  • The animal faeces serves as good farm yard manure like cow dung

  • They are also means of income to farmers through sales of farm produce

  • They help in controlling pests

  • They produce young stocks for breeding

  • They are essential to achieving goal of an adequate global food supply
