Orange: properties, benefit and cultivation
Source
There is a wide variety of oranges that differ according to their shape, size or color of the pulp. This fruit grows on trees of small size and constant leaf. This tree requires a lot of light, is sensitive to low temperatures, and requires a lot of water for the ripening of the fruits.
Oranges have a rough and very aromatic shell, their color goes from orange to yellow. When removing the skin we find a whitish skin, this skin contains a high fiber content. The pulp of this fruit is divided into segments and flavor can be sweet. acid or bitter, according to the species.
Sweet oranges (Citrus sinensis) are the most popular for consumption, while bitter oranges (Citrus aurantium) are used to prepare jams and liqueurs. Both species include, in turn, numerous varieties that differ in size, color, acidity, juiciness and number of seeds. Three groups stand out, and these in turn have subdivisions of species:
.-Navel Group. This group is characterized by its navel. The 'Navel' oranges ripen quickly and bear fruits without large seeds. The peel can be easily removed, its color is intense orange, with a sweet and pleasant flavor. The varieties stand out: Navelate, Navelina, Newhall, Washington Navel, Lane Late and Thompson.
.-Group of 'Blancas'. This group does not have the navel of the Navel. They are trees of great vigor, of medium to large size. They emphasize the Salustiana and Valencia Late, usually do not have seeds or a few.
.-Group of the 'Sanguinas'. This group is distinguished from the rest by its characteristic reddish color, both in pulp and in the shell. Stresses the Sanguinelli variety.
This fruit is well known for its high content of vitamin C, which makes it an excellent antioxidant, but this fruit offers other benefits:
It helps prevent arteriosclerosis and prevents some infections.
.- It is highly recommended in cases of flu and colds due to its ability to strengthen the immune system.
.- Your contribution of vitamins A and B helps maintain the health of the skin, hair, nails and eyesight.
.-It is rich in potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron and phosphorus.
.-It favors blood pressure, heart rate and bone strength.
This fruit should be consumed in moderation, as its high content of citric acid can harm people suffering from gastritis, ulcers or gastroesophageal reflux.
The orange tree must take care of some aspects for its plantation:
.-Design of the plantation. Each tree must be based on the dimensions of the land and how we are going to collect, with machines or manually, we must also take into account the climate and soil.
.-Fertilizer. These plants need many macro and micronutrients that allow them to grow in the best way.
.-Irrigation. These plants need a lot of irrigation, a humid environment is ideal, although there is no need to abuse irrigation.
.-Pruning. This tree must be pruned so that the light can enter and thus increase production.
.-Weed control. The elimination of weeds allows: ventilate the superficial layers of the soil, incorporate better the fertilizers, which increases the absorption capacity of the water. This should be done several times a year, and the best months to do it are from March to September. The soil should be kept with a light vegetable cover the rest of the year.
