I was thinking about my mom today. She taught me the work ethic I have, which has brought me so far in life. I've been called a workaholic. My mom though, she really was a workaholic, not as much anymore since her knees have gone bad. She wasn't always a workaholic by choice. She was a single mother. Her work always made her do a lot of standing, on concrete floors. She worked as a hair stylist when I was really young. The hours were conflicting with her kids school schedule, so she gave it up to work nights in a factory. In the factory setting is when arthritis started setting in. Once the factory shut down, my mom went back to school for nursing. As a nurse, she has worked and sometimes still works up to 16 hour shifts that demand her to be on her feet for hours. Her knees started going bad from her hard work.
As a disability counselor, I've heard the stories and watched grown men cry in my office when their bodies wear out and they can no longer do their careers. As an empathetic person, and being my mother's daughter, I know it must be hard for her to know that her body is wearing out. Some days I've wished I could just win the lottery to help my mother obtain the medical care she needs. As I see my posts pick up on Steemit, I sometimes wonder and hope that I could make enough money to make a difference in my life and those around me. If I became Steemit Rich, which seems more likely than winning the lottery lol, I would buy my mom two shiny pair of new knees (knee replacements). To do that, I would have to supplement her income while she recuperates and also pay for her treatment.
This story isn't for a pity vote, or a flood of votes. I am sure most of us have those thoughts... "if only I had the money," about something. I would like to hear what it is that you think about. If you reached great monetary success on Steemit, how would it make a difference for you, or what would you buy? I hope we all reach great landmarks of success together!
Good question, I would invest it and "retire" early, then work in the field I want to without worrying about money.
That's a good plan! It's always good to work in a field you love.
Will buy house & lot. It's difficult to be homeless (^_^)
I'm sorry to hear you are experiencing homelessness. I hope you are able to get yourself into a home soon!
Wow you have a great mom. I would also wish the best for her. I also had a great mom. But she passed on the new years day of 2003.
I am so sorry to read that! Mothers are special
I am very sorry to hear you lost your mom. Thank you for your best wishes!
Its been years now but still missing here.. you are very welcome.
Your mother looks really nice. She worked hard and I understand you want to take her pain away. This is a beautiful goal and I hope you will be able to make it reality soon!
If I could be steemit rich I would buy my health and then work hard to make a difference in the art community.
If I would became really rich I would make an artist in residence. A safe haven without any pressure but with a workplace and nice housing.
Thank you! My mom is nice and hilarious, most people love to be around her.
You said you would buy your health, do you have health issues?
I think it is awesome that you want to help the art community. I meet so many people who want to go into art, but it is a tough field to go into and support yourself. I hope you reach this goal, then I'm going to have to send them over to you!
Since you have a beautiful heart just like as your mother, maybe luck will find you and you will able to give your mother a much deserve gift.
If I will be successful here on Steemit, just like you, I want to treat my old parents something that they haven't experience before. They too need some medical related thing and I do hope it is not yet late before I can give it. My father used to complain also about his knees too, for the meantime since we cannot afford surgeries, no medical insurance also, we just bought him a massaging tool that somehow "according to him" eased the pain.
Thank you! That is a good compliment to say I have a heart like my mother's because she truly does have a good heart. I think all of us just want to help our loved ones. Especially when you have good parents who have done so much already. It is hard seeing them grow old, and have health issues. I am glad you found something that helps soothe some of your father's pain.
My husband is in the same knee boat as your mom so I'd have to agree I'd get him a knee replacements too.
Technically his insurance would cover some of it but we can't afford for him to take the proper time off work. I know the man would try to go back early because of it.
That is the hard part for most. She can't stop working, plus she doesn't have insurance. I'm sure she could get some assistance with Vocational Rehabilitation, but she would make too much money unless she scaled back working, which is hard for her to do. It always seems like a catch twenty-two. She's already cut back working a lot, compared to how she used to work. I hope your husband is able to get the treatment he needs.
