I get your frustration, but I guess it also depends on how you use Facebook. Of course there are a lot of self centered people that are egoistic and only care about self-expression. But no one forces you to be "friends" with them. I have only a few important people on Facebook and use it mainly for groups and for following up on things I like (mainly musicians, so I never miss an album release etc ;) )
So you can get annoyed by the typical Facebook experience or you try to crop it down to the things that are really important to you.
