I just made this post on Facebook and thought others here might possibly find it useful:
Anyone else concerned with censorship and other related issues on FB, YouTube & Twitter: I have recently joined Steemit.com, which is a blockchain based (like Bitcoin) social media platform.
There is a connected application, DTube, which is basically a blockchain based version of YouTube. Both platforms are a bit unpolished compared to FB & YT, but they are still quite good and usable.
One of the main ideas of these platforms is to eliminate the censorship issues found in popular corporate owned social media platforms. Censorship can and does still happen on Steemit to a lesser degree, but it seems that this situation is getting sorted out in a desirable direction as development of the platform continues.
Another advantage of Steemit is that you can get paid for your posts and comments (in a Bitcoin like cryptocurrency), and this pay can translate into real money.
I found the initial sign-up to be a bit challenging. It took a number of days to get accepted, and then by one wrong keystroke (completely my own fault) I lost my password, and there is no recovery path if that happens. So I had to sign up again, and had to use a different user name, and different phone number and email address to accomplish. So: if you sign up, be patient, and make sure you don't lose that password once you're in!
