Facebook, Reddit, Steem - surveillance, datamining, advertisers and privacy

in #facebook7 years ago

Edward Snowden recently tweeted something along the lines of "Facebook is a surveillance company rebranded as 'social media'" and it stirred up a lot of discussions. Especially since the media giant recently suspended Cambridge Analytica which according to wikipedia is a privately held company that combines data mining and data analysis with strategic communication for the electoral process. They accused the company of improperly harvesting data from millions of Facebook users and not deleting it after being told to do so. The company denied any wrongdoing and issued a statement saying that the firm "fully complies" with Facebook's term of service.

Edward Snowden went straight for facebook in a tweet yesterday saying

Businesses that make money by collecting and selling detailed records of private lives were once plainly described as "surveillance companies." Their rebranding as "social media" is the most successful deception since the Department of War became the Department of Defense.

I wanted to discuss a bit more the surveillance and compare it to sites like Facebook, Reddit and the Steem blockchain.

Let's look at Facebook

Some users believe that their data on Facebook is super safe because "users who I haven't befriended can't see my activity, status updates and personal information" and "Facebook let's me choose which info I make public".

This is only a small part of your safety, Facebook doesn't care that your ex girlfriend isn't able to stalk you as efficiently anymore since you unfriended her. What Facebook does is sell your information to the highest bidder, this can be ad-agencies that want to improve what they are selling you, the government or other entities that want your information.

Let's go over some ways that facebook sells your activity, this is the part you have complied to according to its privacy policy, you're using its services so it can now do whatever it likes with the data you are handing over to it.

You like a page on Facebook and right after you will notice a lot more ads popping up related to that page. Words you've used the most on Status updates are also sold in a common fashion to advertisers to better target your interests with ads. It collects all data points you input onto their site to better build up a picture of you - even though it may not be completely true its worth more to advertisers.

Now remember that Facebook uses cookies and you can click the "like" button on many other pages and connect it to your Facebook account - yes, all that gets saved. Even though people are aware of the information they are inputting into Facebook, they might not realize the types of correlations Facebook can make based on that data.

There was an interesting analysis of which users are in relationships and how it affected their mood on status profiles, etc. Now this data is from 2014 and I'm sure its algorithms have gotten better and smarter since then.

Even if you are trying to be careful what kind of information you are letting Facebook sell to advertisers so they can brainwash you either directly or subliminally, it is not easy to remember at all times that most apps you are connected through Facebook with are all sending information to Facebook.

Since most users are using most apps on their phones nowadays, imagine what else Facebook can track such as location, files, photos and selfies - the "hey facebook, here get my facial recognition for free!" Even if they don't access your camera without your consent, you are handing them selfies and pictures with your name tagged in so often that their facial recognition keeps getting refined constantly.

Here is a video of a Chinese Street surveillance with object and face recognition, take a look into the future.

Here are some more detailed points copied from fieldguide.gizmodo of how Facebook adds to its user profiles:

Where you’re going:

The big data point Facebook gets when you install its mobile applications is where you are every second of the day. This gives it information on the bands you like seeing, the tourist spots you enjoy, and even the individual stores you walk into. If you’re not happy with this, you can revoke these permissions on Android and iOS

The websites you visit:

So many websites and third-party services use Facebook technologies, from Like buttons to login options, that Facebook has a pretty good idea of what you’re up to when you’re not actually on Facebook. If you want to limit how this data can be collected and used, then you need to do some tidying up in your Facebook settings.

Your financial status:

Even if you never post about your money worries (or joys) on Facebook, it can still build up a fairly good assessment of your financial position to sell on to advertisers. How? By combining data points like your online purchases and where you live, together with records provided by its marketing partners from various sources.

Status updates you almost post:

Facebook can tell when you’re about to write something and then think better of it, as per a 2012 research paper (though the contents of your self-censored musings aren’t logged). If you’re thinking of making a drunken boast or a barbed comment and then think better of it, Facebook sees your indecisiveness.

Apps you install:

It’s not just Facebook’s privacy policy you need to worry about, but also how third-party apps are using your data—while a Facebook quiz may seem innocuous, telling the world which bands you’ve seen gives another data point to advertisers. Pay close attention to the permissions apps ask for and remove the ones you don’t need.

Apps your friends install:

Bad news—apps your dimwitted friends install can gather information you’re sharing with them too. To limit this, go to the Apps section of Settings on Facebook, click Edit under Apps others use, and then untick all the categories of information you’re not comfortable sharing. Alternatively, unfriend the worst offenders.

When you’re feeling low:

Another trick Facebook’s algorithms can do is make a pretty good guess about when you’re at a low ebb. This is one of the data points Facebook promises it isn’t selling on to advertisers, but it’s a sign of the way all these various social media signals can be combined together to make some revealing conclusions about you.

Facebook’s other apps:

Even if you barely touch Facebook, the social network can still harvest information about you through the other apps it owns, like Instagram and WhatsApp. If you want to stop this from happening, you can switch off data sharing in WhatsApp, though you’re more or less stuck with it if you’re an Instagram user.

To switch it shortly to Reddit

This post is already getting longer than I planned. People say that Reddit is completely different because there you don't have to input a lot of information to create an account and you can remain "anonymous". In a way the signup process is a lot similar to Steemit, except that Reddit also relies on advertisement revenue to continue working and earning such as Facebook. Compared to Facebook it's different in a sense cause all information you've input through posts and comments are public like on Steem which means you usually have to be more careful of what you type since you know everyone will be able to access that information in forever.

On Facebook you feel a lot more safe posting whatever you like because you get the feeling that "only your friends" can see it - this sense of safety can quickly be removed considering Facebook is selling all of that information to anyone who asks.

While Reddit may be similar to Steem in a way that your posts and comments are public which means you can track a user through certain sites that use certain algorithms such as https://snoopsnoo.com/ where you can input any reddit users name in and it will give you some surprising important and correct information of that user, well unless you've been feeding Reddit lies - which many do considering this is the internet. It wouldn't surprise me if sites like that were to be developed for Steemians as well soon enough - here we can even track other users and tags we vote on than just comment/post about.

As long as you don't post selfies or your location and other important info on Reddit you'd think you are safe compared to Facebook, right? Well that would be the case unless the two companies start matching browser/ip addresses or the bulks of information you've input into both to assume which users could be the same.

Here is where Steem is different, being open-source and all we can choose our own front-end to use. If we want to truly remain anonymous we create accounts anonymously, we don't give out any personal information about ourselves on the blockchain, etc. Most importantly though, Steem and Steemit don't rely on advertisement revenue so they don't have the need to sell their users information to advertisers/others. Whatever you want people to know of yourself is already public on the blockchain.

Hope this post helped you differentiate a bit between the 2 (soon to be 3) social media giants and how they operate. :)

If you have any questions and want to add some more info (there is a lot I didn't mention in the post) feel free to do so in the comment section as I will be reading all comments and rewarding quality and discussion while flagging spam.

Thanks for reading!

You will be suprised how much information a corruption fighters could manually mine from instagram profiles of corruptionist's relatives and friends.

I can't imagine how much could mine Instagram / Facebook themselves.

https://steemit.com/fundraising/@jejes/steemit-help-fundraising-for-my-friend-s-father

Hi everyone! pls do help to upvote this post for my friend's father's heart. They need our support right now..

Yes friend @bronevik, you can really get too much information out of the profiles of social networks, those fighters against corruption have more information, and facebook and instagram can undermine a lot really xd @acidyo

Facebook know better know myself than me. In future people will realize that how it really affecting their lives because they are playing with your minds. You like something so you searched or discussed about it but you don't want to buy it but they are putting pressure on your mind to buy the thing by consistently putting adv. in front of you. This is reason Mark Zuckerberg bought whatsapp as well as instagram so that he get more information about the people. Steemit is better than any social media sites..that why they are banning cryptocurrencies ads because they feel insecure from the increasing popularity of steemit. Steemit is freedom and future.

I saw something which I found rather amusing on Facebook. It was a group where people were testing their security by asking others what they saw.

One person smugly came in and said "me".

What followed were a series of "nopes", "nothing" and "can't see a thing".

"Perfect" they said.

Then one individual came in and said "you have two children - boy and a girl - you have red hair (or at least have had it that way in the last 3 months), your husband has short brown hair, he is 37"... and it went on.

Turned out that they'd gone to the display photo (because these are all visible), found a like from the husband and then read about all her information from his perspective instead.

Goes to show, you're never as locked down as you think you are!

Yeah, that's a concern. You can lock down your profile, but someone else may leak your information. Did her husband lock down his profile after that? That's the real question.

I believe so, first thing she went off to secure!

Wow! Really? People like checking profiles on Facebook. They love pranking others. Thanks for letting us know.

The answer is simple: don't use them. Honestly, I've been practicing that for a while now and it is the most effective strategy.

I'm thinking more and more that the web (not the Internet, but the web) has been completely lost to "them", and it's time for the a web to get popular. Several blockchain projects are on this problem and while there's nothing great yet, it will come.

Even thought everything you mentioned is true, I don't see the majority of the people worried about their information being monetized by thee giants.

It is like this was non important for them and how "normal" websites work.

Lately I have been thinking about the possible implications of all these companies with so much information about individuals, and researching AI simultaneously.

Have you read news like this one from forbes ?

And Alexa acting all weird mocking us

My favorite part about having facebook/instagram is that they target ads to me through listening to what the fuck I'm saying. Every week we get some weird fucked up ads shown to us within a couple of hours of when we had a conversation about said things/people. We were talking about her coworker who is wanting to get married and is also a lesbian. Like 4 hours later she's getting wedding ads for lesbians on Instagram. Wow, what a weird coincidence! There's no way we're being snooped on, nah.

you're freaking me out man!!

i once bought a medical product at walgreens and hours later was getting ads for that exact product. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

Everyone should look into 3 things - The Brave browser, DuckDuckGo, and the software company known as Substratum - the trifecta of privacy, anonymity and freedom on the world wide web.

Check out my post on Substratum:

https://steemit.com/substratum/@theskim/internet-freedom-in-the-age-of-information-the-time-for-substratum-is-now

More coming on Brave and DuckDuckGo soon.

The fact that most apps do that is fucking annoying, to say the least. But I enjoy the fact that even hardcore skeptics of how invasive these companies can be are made aware of practices like this once they figure out what's going on after a few incidents like this happen to them.

It is very unfortunately, if this really happened, how they (Facebook) has violated the basic rights of its users with no permission.
I personally feel very in disadvantage with this incident, fortunately since active in Steemit about 6 months ago, I have very rarely update the status on Facebook, although my basic information and data has been stored since 6 years ago in their application.
What can I do for the next time?
Thank you @acidyo for this information.

i read Snowdens tweet earlier this week and it really packed quite the punch. here was my retweet and response:

Snowden dropping truth bombs about the inherent evils of social media platforms' mechanisms of monetization allows for a discourse where the impact outweighs the irony of the post itself.

its so true though, and i think part of the reason why people are so casual about it is - it doesnt even feel like theres a way to prevent or stop it. the only way is to have never participated in these platforms at all. i have severly cut back on what i put on facebook and other Social Media 1. because im trying to limit what im giving them and 2. it provides little to no benefit for me.

and 3. nobody is doing anything about it! the government surely doesnt care. politicians - yeah right. its completely unethical and also terrifying to think what companies and governments know about our daily lives and habits.

Really is this the facebook we have been believing soo far...this shit has been selling our personal data to some government or something they really suck.....
Really if we compare the same thing with the steemit , anyone even the illitratest person can find the difference....you spend your time here creating content and make money out of that ..get knowledge and this aint selling anything from us....while on the other hand the Mr. Facebook....(i know whosoever is on the steemit platform wud have lost the interest in any other social media platform by now .....) what does that even provide to us....consuming our precious time , our data usage and now the personal info....
F**k facebook....

With smart phones, social media and online shopping they have essentially total information awareness. They know more about you than you do. And of course their primary goal being surveillance and control is evidenced by all the recent blatant censorship they have been implementing. Obviously censoring things pays better than letting people post what they want.

Fuck Censorship, Fuck Net Neutrality, Fuck illegal spying, Fuck the corrupt corporations, Fuck the corrupt government.

That's all I have to say

lol, yeah.. I didn't even bring up censorship at all in this post as it would have never ended. :D

Oh no.. I've come to think of it... this is the way government operatives will come straight to your door when they sense your talking against it. With this information, they will easily monitor what the public is up to. We easily let all this knowledge out as we have fun when interacting with our friends, but thanks to @acidyo, we have every reason to shun the platform if that's what is required. Users on facebook mostly talk about the previous nights they spent at the bar, where they spent the weekend, and this all goes back to them when they speak ill about the government. Let's have people join steemit where people are all about writing content and not what happened to them the night before.

The current state of surveillance in the world is unfortunate... Google, Facebook, etc need to be reigned in massively. Everyone should check out the Brave broswer, and instead of using Google for your search engine, consider using something like DuckDuckGo. Using those two services in tandem willl essentially eliminate all trackers, block adds, and make you MUCH more anonymous while surfing the web. Don't use Google anymore - take back your data and don't feed the surveillance beast!

Most importantly though, Steem and Steemit don't rely on advertisement revenue so they don't have the need to sell their users information to advertisers/others.

Not quite true. I wrote about that months ago
https://steemit.com/@drakos/steemit-s-disturbing-ads-policy

Ads and Analytics Partners, brought to you by https://steemit.com/privacy.html :

We may partner with third-party advertisers, ad networks, and analytics providers to deliver advertising and content targeted to your interests and to better understand your use of the Services. These third parties may collect information sent by your computer, browser, or mobile device in response to a request for content, such as unique identifiers, your IP address, or other information about your computer or device.

Interesting, I hadn't heard of that before. Hmm.

Nobody has, because they don't read the FAQ, privacy policy and TOS... lol

Time to go back using the cli_client for posting and curating I guess. xP

Or you can setup and run your own condenser

I am a bot

Wow. This is so revealing. We often throw away our sense of privacy in the name of socializing, especially with those you do not normally wanna share your thoughts or data with.

The fact however is that most of these companies can't be sued because you signed a terms of use agreement when you signed up for the use of the platform. Almost everyone do not bother to consider the contents of those agreements.

It's good you have pointed out how to check and uncheck our accounts to make it more secure. I can now make my account as safe as possible.

I haven't seen you writing for a long time. That was unexpected.

PS: I haven't read it yet, but I will and for the moment I wanted to say that it is good to see you writing again, this is how I started to follow you :)

I was just recently thinking about how we used go back and forth with memes back in early to mid 2017! This took me back!!

It really is scary how much information is on Facebook and how privacy invasive it truly is! It would not surprise me at all if everyone in the world had a matrix score with every little detail known about them.

Interesting post! I never thought about FB as a surveillance company disguised as a social media company. This makes complete sense. I also liked the meme with everyone now a days just talking to their wire tap like it’s nothing. So true! Thanks for the post!

i'm trying to figure out how to detach myself from google. the problem is that i'm an android user, and apple isn't much better as an alternative.

also, google the search engine has no equal.

but i hate that google knows so much about me

Mark Fuckerberg is a goon, like Musk, Gates and other geniuses the elite is presenting us. To make us believe in the system the smart drop out can succeed. The real owners are the 0.01% who own the whole show. Just don’t believe the hype.

Facebook and google? HA
STEEM AND BRAVE!

Someone information can easily be access and manipulated through Facebook. I think reddit is the answer to all facebook trauma

gooooood thank you for sharing

That is a great analysis.
I've stopped using Facebook but the damage is probably already done. I didn't know of all that.
Facebook sucks.
I hope more people learn about steemit because when they do they won't care about Facebook

I Strongly agree with you dear. Facebook's surveillance has always come across as #sketchy and they're now #datamining non-users. This is why it's difficult for me to stay on there,

steemit is still the best

What surprises me is that how stupid this global collusion think that people are. It never shocked me though. What shocks me is our willingness to prove their assumption of our stupidity correct.

Sir @acidyo,
Now it is not possible to get ideas about the market, but we have to start working on how we can take this forward.

They have an eye on you, and they’re keeping a lot of data stored somewhere.

Thanks for this post, it has really opened my eyes about facebook activities on our accounts.

Thanks for sharing this photography is very nice post i love post

Steemit is the best

aku pantas bergembira dengan postingan@acidyo

Nice work. Admired to read this post. Just followed you. There should be privacy option in steem like there should be a option to make comments and replies hidden. Thats a suggestion.

yeah I do agree with you. Facebook sells data for millions for sure. thats why I started using Facebook less and started using steemit platform a lot. at least a decentralized community.

Yeah, information about us is being sold all the time without our permission. More people need to open their eyes, because this is so unfair... It feels really uncomfortable knowing that your information is flying around to all kinds of entities.

Facebook sheeplings remind me of the Royal Wedding.

Very funny video and so true. ☺ lol

The ads are basically like cars in the GTA games; once you start driving one, that's the only one you see everywhere!

But buddy I believe it's not only Facebook that stores your data, it's now all over the internet like when I open websites other than facebook same things pop up again and again, same is the case with YouTube, so I guess they now access your IP address and collect your data, which is kind of weird.

You are very right. All the info provide was right. Every activity that facebook see u doing more than three times you will see it ads. Recently I was searching sneakers on facebook and within a minute I got an app on it. I was shocked but I have now understood it through your post. Thanks for sharing now I know how to provide my info there.

nice posting brother @acidyo 👍👍

When you copy/paste or repeatedly type the same comments you could be mistaken for a bot.

Tips to avoid being flagged

Thank You! ⚜

You have provided very useful information here. Thank you for the tips, it will be judiciously utilized.

Well, everything is public here, but I would prefer a completely public database that everyone has access to as opposed to closed-door private databases that are essentially pay-walled. Now if we could just have all countries get on the same level of public tax disclosure that some countries do...

Cambridge Analytica is one of many companies that has been caught with its hands in the cookie jar. And they will not be the #LAST. Stealing, misusing and selling users info is commonplace in the Tech. World. The only way to #STOP the madness is to refrain from going to their sights.
Thanks for sharing this info.

True our info is public courtesy of the blockchain thanks to blockchain technology. Great post though!

I found the post highly educative and I thank you for the education.

What I would like to know is can this data that facebook has at its fingertips, not be sold to governments if they are seeking information on their citizens that could lead to the arrest of criminals?

I see that mostly CCTV's are encouraged but spying by government is discouraged. I think a community deserves someone who can account for everyone who lives within Its confines. This is in utopia though.

The reality is man will abuse such power. They will use it for something nefarious because they can. Any application that takes people's data without informing them of the consequence is a thief and a liar.

It's just sad that the populace need the social media.

oii ka follow kei ngen ka vote kei hy, bek sombong that beuh.
