Once upon a time, a community of hedgehogs faced a particularly cold winter...

Like many other winters, they knew that they wouldn't be able to stay out of their burrows for long, and that they would have to stay closer together...

But this particular winter, the cold was more than any they had experienced so far...

They realised that they could only overcome this enormous difficulty by staying close to each other.

They soon realised that, being so close together, the thorns of their long-time friends would end up sticking into those closest to them!

Some decided for a moment not to stay so close, but soon found that they had to endure the minor injuries caused by their neighbour's thorns, but the warmth their bodies gave them meant that they wouldn't freeze to death.

Today I've shared with you this little tale that is told to children, but which teaches us many lessons even to adults.

One of the great conclusions of this fable is that those closest to us are usually the ones who hurt us the most with their actions, but they are also the ones who give us the affection we need to get through the greatest difficulties, which can even be deadly (like the harsh winter).

We have to be able to accept others as they are, knowing that although they have thorns, they are also wounded by our thorns, and that no two people are the same.

Acceptance of your neighbour and forgiveness are essential for a healthy and prosperous community life.

At the end of a long day, with nothing published yet, I was driving my car home, getting ready for a simple dinner and an excellent, well-deserved night's rest when this fable came to mind.

I've had some problems to deal with lately, and past memories are one of them. Let's accept the differences, accepting our neighbours and ourselves in our human frailty, and in the condition of the other's need.

I hope you enjoyed this short story...

A good night to you all!
