Lewis Hamilton is probably the most influential driver F1 has ever seen, on a level that transcends that of Michael Schumacher. While part of this is due to the advent of social media making it easier for drivers to spread their personal views and advocacy, you have to credit Lewis’ resolve and the strength he’s shown through adversity.
I’d argue it was Lewis who helped drive the commercial nature of F1. Not because he’s necessarily the most marketable driver (I think that’s Ricciardo) but because of his work outside the sport with celebrities, advocacy initiatives/social change movements, and the general outreach he does. Lewis has never seemed like a driver only focused on racing, the same way Max Verstappen is.
