In today's Ethereum core dev meeting, they discussed the possibility of staging the Metropolis release as two separate hard forks.
Metropolis has a lot of changes so the urgent ones such as the difficulty bomb delay (EIP 649) and possibly ETH issuance reduction (EIP 186) can be addressed earlier, with the rest of the changes coming in the later fork at a more well-defined date.
The only drawbacks of having multiple hard forks is more testing work required and the fact that hard forks are stressful. The devs will discuss this further in next week's meeting.
In my opinion, from a trading point of view, having separate releases could provide a more steady stream of positive news.

Thank you for this post this is the 1st I hear of this roadmap.
These multiple hardforks are not only stressful on developers but its creates short-term uncertainty among investors. Even though they think it will provide multiple streams of positive news it can have the unintended effect of the market dropping because of the fear.
The devs did not talk about the price. Updated the post to clarify that. I think it would be good news because everyone is waiting for Metropolis, so having it come in stages is a welcome change instead of releasing the entire thing later.
I agree doing it in stages makes sense.
