I'm curious if this didn't involve some kind of Russian hack job since Putin announced yesterday that he would be starting a new Russian national currency on the ethereum blockchain. I'm sure an awful lot of ethereum changed hands during this price drop. They will need A LOT of ether to run the bots for this currency system.

I am not sure if that is the case. The crash was only for a few seconds. Anyone lucky could potentially take a huge huge advantage of it.
It is possible. Can you imagine how many coins had to change hands to drive the price down that low, and then how many had to change hands to drive it back up?
