What happens is that all ETH owned on the chain before the HF are now on the NEW chain ( Hard forked one ) but also on the OLD chain : ETC .
For example : I just found some of my old balance in ETC , just because it was there ( free !? ) ... what will I do with it ? SELL it and get it on my ETH wallet , as that IS the real chain that will be maintained , and ETC still has some value now.

there is no way to know now if the hard forked chain will be maintained, most likely they will both be maintained, and since the ETC is cheap right now, it's a good buy
