White Sweet Peas.

White Sweet Peas.

The Latin name for Sweet Pea is Lathyrus odoratus and they are annuals of the legume genus. Since the 17th century they've been cultivated for use in gardens however, the modern forms have been developed thanks to the Scottish nurseryman Henry Eckford, is responsible for the appearance of dozens of cultivars during the late 1800s.

Sweet peas are native to the Mediterranean region, originating in south west Italy. These annual climbers are available in many colours, and they also grow for lengthy periods. Not every sweet pea variety is fragrant but those that are, well and truly live up to their name. There are over 160 species available.

They do need looking after, as they are prone to attract a number of pests and insects. Despite the term ‘pea,’ sweet peas are not edible and can actually be very toxic. Just about every cultivar of the sweet pea flower is presently available in international markets apart from the yellow one.

The beautifully coloured and fragrant sweet pea is very popular with owners of cottage gardens and the less formal type of garden. They are effective climbers and can be easily trained to grow over structures such as bamboo stakes, fences and walls. When panted in containers or hanging baskets they make attractive displays as they spill gracefully over the edge.

Sweet peas are available in many colours such as red, pink, blue, white and lavender. They flower in early summer and throughout the season and make wonderful cut flowers. Sweet peas look a little like fringed butterflies. Their stems appear folded and are sturdy enough to support abundant flowers that grow on each stem.

Beautiful photos. Lovely blossoms.

Thanks very much Steven.

You have made these little sweet peas into works of art! So lovely, well done Trudee! U+R :)

Thanks very much my friend. I don't see many sweet peas growing in my area so I was glad to capture these fragrant little beauties.

These are such a beautiful images of this delightful legume Trudee 🌸💖🌸

Thanks very much Lena. They are special flowers aren't they?

Howdy tonight trudeehunter! Wonderful photos! So gardeners grow these just for the flowers since they can't be eaten?

Yes......they look wonderful in vases or arrangements and their fragrance is a bonus!

Howdy tonight trudeehunter! Do you have a flower garden or a vegetable garden? I guess if you have your own flower garden then you wouldn't have to look far or travel to find beautiful posting material.

Unfortunately not. John and I moved into a unit a few years ago and although I started out with a variety of plants on our balcony, the wind was just too strong (from off the coast) especially in our storm season which is now and they cannot survive without more protection. We traded a garden for the sea which is a pretty good trade off in my opinion. Miss harvesting my own veggies though.

haha! I'd make that trade any day and never regret it also! You guys have lots of local farmers markets and things like that I assume?

There are regular farmers markets held in most areas as far as I can tell. Both in the city and the country towns.

Howdy today trudeehunter! Do you guys try to get most of your produce from the local growers or just get them at the supermarket?
