In Indonesian the plant is known as sirih. The Acehnese call it Ranub. This one plant is often used for chewing leaves. Eating betel or menyirih, has become a hereditary tradition for the people of Aceh.
In addition to edible, this one leaf is also used by the people of Serambi Mecca as one dish to glorify the guests. It is customary for Acehnese to present betel when there are guests visiting.
Every guest who comes bersilatmimi or at a particular event, will be presented with betel nut betel and whiting. Betel, betel plus a little whiting eaten simultaneously.
