This guy can tear a man apart!
We had to go over the mountain this morning to a meeting at the farm venue where our new free trauma training course for child workers will start on Monday next week.
Unexpectedly on our return, at the beginning of the mountain pass, we saw a troop of baboons on both sides of the road.
Come meet the baboons!
We left our place as soon as the sun cleared the mountains.
Heloooo! What was this sitting next to the road!
And here was a mother with two youngsters!
Now here's the scary part, this gentleman was sitting at the other side of the road watching me.
My window was open to stick the camera out, but it would have been suicide to climb out of the car!
The mommy was teaching the baby how to strip grass seeds!
And here the little guy was eating the seeds!
Very busy here to pluck the seeds!
Something scared the baby and he ran to a concrete post foundation.
Luckily I kept the car's motor running and as the big guy started growling we were out of there.
I am so glad that Marian had no food in the car.

And there you have it. Baboons are very dangerous animals and much more so when there are babies around. We once encountered a troop with babies and we were on foot in a narrow valley with very high and steep rock sides. Fortunately as the male screamed from the top of the cliff, we slowly started retreating by walking backwards facing them in case of a rush attack. That male's scream was bone chilling and still in my ears today.
A message here to tourists and travelers, never approach, or try to feed a Baboon, or any other wild monkeys. Their bite can crush bone!

Great shot but very sensible keeping the car running and ready for a quick exit they can as you say get very nasty Luckily I haven’t encountered that but have hear stories and i use would not Risk it with them
The thing is that I know how fast they are JJ, so I had Marian in the passenger seat watching the big guy while I took the photos of the mom and the babies at the other side.
Upon her warning that he was starting to bare his teeth, I took a quick snap and dropped the clutch of the car.

You were very sensible and had a plan which is the thing to do but to many times people are not that way in these situations
I often feel if an animal attacks a human it’s because of bad choices on the humans part
Mostly always human error JJ, unless the animal is rabid as then it will attack anything. A dog inspector visited my home once and I told him not to touch my dog. "Dingo" was a half cross between a Rottweiler and a Doberman and he was a strictly one man dog.
So the "inspector" wouldn't listen and reached out in smoothing tones to Dingo.
Well, Dingo grabbed him by the arm and I jumped in to separate them.
Afterwards the "inspector" wanted to sue me, but he had no case as I had warned him.
Just a small example of human error my friend.

Wow, I didn’t know that they had such powerful jaws. I saw the baboons only in the zoo and would not want to meet them in their habitat))

Really cool pictures! I'm not sure I'd ever want to be that close to one, they're one tough creature. The closest thing to a baboon to me is my son, who looks very much like that first picture when it's time to turn off the computer. Thankfully he hasn't tried to bite me!

Those baboons have a wicked set of teeth and I never would have figured that they would be so dangerous - not that I ever have to worry about baboons here in Canada (it's bears in our area! Have you got bears there?)
The young one is pretty cute though!
Glad you are aware and respectful of their power and give them a wide berth if they show any signs of being aggravated!

Oh my! Those are animals I only see in zoos!
Do they come near populated areas or do you only have to be mindful of their possible presence in more wilderness areas?
One must always be alert to their presence my friend. Fortunately they stick to rocky and mountain areas, but the fear is that some people feed them and that this will lure them into the suburbs as it did with the smaller monkeys. A male baboon near a house would certainly be a fearsome sight.
Years ago a true movie was made about a heroic farm dog "Jock of the Bushveld" and in this movie the dog gets into a fight with a male baboon. Maybe you would want to Google this movie? "Jock of the Bushveld"

They are quite prepared to die to protect those babies and a crazy baboon ape is worse than a pack of wild dogs!

One animal to give wide berth especially with babies around, normally the sentries sit further out watching your every move.
That scream/bark is enough to stop anyone in their tracks, yes backing out of situations happens out hiking, fortunately we have never encountered bad instances where they actually became aggressive or too close...
The thing is to locate the sentries Lady Joan and to never act suspicious.
They are especially alert to objects that are long and looks like a rifle. A tripod can send them into a frenzy.
I have heard that scream a few times and one can never get used to it.
