A nice surprise was waiting at the top!
Day 2 of the trauma training is done, but I have to charge the camera's batteries to download the pictures first. Instead I will show you a surprise appearance at the mountain peak.
Let's have a look!
I cannot show you the surprise first up, otherwise you will lose attention.Do you also see the head of a man here?
I was snapping low birds flying low over the mountain, when Marian (my wife) alerted me that one of the rocks was moving. I got a severe fright, as a moving rock means a rockfall and it could be very dangerous!
Do you see the moving rock at the top of the rocks in the center of the picture?
Do you see the moving rock now?
Let me zoom a bit! Do you see it now?
The moving rock was a baboon and it was covering something!
Ah! He was shielding the baby!
Oi Vay! There was a whole family up there!
And here they were on their way!
Finally here is a clearer view from the top of the mountain pass!
Imagine crossing this mountain pass over the mountains in the old days by ox-wagon. It was a narrow dirt road with falling rocks often wiping out entire ox-wagon trains. Man and beast tumbling to their death into the depths of the mountain side.
A bit of history about the pass;
"It was early cattle-buyers like Hendrik Lacus and Jeronimus Cruse, sent in 1663 by Zacharias Wagenaar, the replacement for Jan van Riebeeck as Commander at the Cape, who were the first white people to brave the path over the Kloof.
These intrepid travellers must have quaked at the sight of the steep, rocky ascent when they first arrived with their wagons at its foot, and with good reason. Oxen were frequently killed and the wagons smashed as they lost ground and hurtled back down the mountain. It became expedient at times to unload the wagons, take them up piece-by-piece and reassemble them at the summit while the oxen and travellers scrambled up over the rocks. Grooves in the rocks made by the drag-shoes on the wagons can still be seen there after 300 years."

Nowadays we drive across the pass in tarred double lanes, but the steepness still causes many accidents, especially with regards to trucks.
But it is certainly so beautiful to stand at the "look-out" spot, where so many historical figures stood before us over the centuries.

What wonderful adventures are you up to @papilloncharity? I have a lot of catching up to do! Gorgeous views from up there, lucky those baboons were far off, they're quite scary!

Thank you Lady Lizelle, we are only up to the normal exciting stuff, like just completed completed the trauma training class.
That's why we had to travel over the mountains every day.
We were much closer to the baboons about two or 3 posts ago.
Blessings!
Glad the training is going well what amazing views from up there and how cool to spot that familyof Baboons
Thank you JJ and it all came from a very misty early morning.
Blessings!
Misty mornings can be so magical I think
Love them my friend and we saw the cloud that we drove into enveloping the mountain. A great experience to drive into a cloud, although the visibility was almost zero and I had to put the headlights onto bright.
Blessings!
Ohh yes I remember having driven into clouds a few times over the years it is such a cool experience isnt it, but it can make visibility very low and fog lights would be handy to have
How fun to see a baboon family! A priceless experience! All the photos are marvelous!
Thank you my dear friend.
Early in the morning when we crossed over we could hardly see anything due to a misty cloud that covered the mountain, but thankfully it all cleared up at our return.
It was indeed a great experience.
Blessings!
What an amazing view! Seeing your picture from the top of the mountain had me longing to go to the mountains, it is so wonderful to be up close to the clouds!
Good thing your wife has good eyes and you have a good camera to catch those sweet pictures of the baboon family, an animal so foreign to me!
Thanks for sharing!
Hahaha a took a while to train my wife how to really look at what she sees my friend, as the slightest movement is not always spotted, but it is a sure giveaway. She is now even better than me at spotting the unusual.
The top of a mountain is indeed the place the be!
Blessings!
Breathtaking! It's very beautiful where you are at. I am just beginning to realize the beauty of the earth in all areas. I am somewhat of an 'armchair traveller' and don't get out much. Thank you for sharing your portion of the world.
My pleasure to share my friend and I am out in nature every day as much as I can. The photography is just an extra sideline.
Glad that you liked the post.
Blessings!
Great shots - and of the pass! I didn't realise there was a railway line alongside it. And I've been to that lookout point...
Thank you and oh yes Lady Fiona, the railway line was built along the old wagon pass. I am now waiting for the old steam train dates when it crosses over on the way to Elgin to get a shot of it exactly at this spot, before it enters underneath the new pass roads.
Blessings!
Nation tends to forget the hardship original arrivals had to endure to slowly build this country, history eroded as to what actually transpired. The pass has brilliant views coming through the mountain.
Baboons are in their rightful place on top of the mountains, let's hope they have not learned to throw stones, have another wonderful day with training Stephen.
Oh yeah Lady Joan, history is being changed and lots of truths are being cast aside. Mere brief mentions are being made of important occurrences in history and most everything else is binned.
I think there were a few occasions where the baboons created havoc my friend. They are definitely animals that are not to be trifled with.
The fear is that some well meaning soul will stick an arm out of a car window with a treat and the baboon will walk off with the whole arm.
Another fear is that if the baboons get used to humans feeding them, they might invade the suburbs. Imagine taking an early morning stroll in your garden and coming face to face with an angry baboon male. It will be sure to frighten your breakfast right out of you, in the wrong place most naturally Lol.
Humans have encroached into every area, animals will take what they want once they get over the shy stage, no going for a walk straight into a baboon not really fun at all...
So true!
Have a great Saturday ahead.
Blessings...
Wow! What an awesome view from the top! You had me going with the "Do you see" photos. I was like, "what is he talking about?" LOL
Hahaha, that was my intention my friend, with the "Do you see" shots.
Thankfully we have people on steemit that actually read posts.
There are indeed some great views from the top.
Blessings!
What a beautiful place! It's been many years, I have not gone close to the mountain. I really miss the adventure.
The money family seems curious about you! :)
Fortunately the baboons were too far away to be curious about us my friend.
They were very high up on the mountain cliffs.
The mountains always offer great adventures and you should visit them again.
Blessings and thank you!
Great shots of the baboons, Sir Stephen. Sure is a dangerous path.
I see the face at the top of the peak. He looks disgruntled and has snout of a wild boar. There is another face to the left side ( halfway done) with the face /nose of a deer.
You see so much more than me Lady Jo, but I have a solid excuse.
I am getting old hahaha.
At first I thought that you meant that the baboon male had a snout like a wild boar, but then I remembered that we only have Warthogs over here and I don't know what the snout of a wild boar looks like.
Then I Googled the snout of a wild boar and studied the pictures in my post.
The answer hit me like a runaway baboon.
You were talking about the face rock Lol.
Now do I need to explain to you how I identified the nose of a deer hahaha.
Just teasing you a bit here in the reply in the hope that I can get a smile.
Blessings and thank you!
Haha Sir Stephen. I’m also getting old and maybe my imagination is getting carried away.
I’ll circle what I looks like a wild boar and the deer face wearing a hat.
Hahaha, Lady Jo, you see the same as Marian.
People call me the airplane and Marian the nuts and bolts, as she does all of the small things that makes the plane fly.
I see the Gestalt, the BIG things Lol
See below what I saw. (Not as artistically circled and detailed as yours) Lol
That rock is a bit two faced. 😂 I see the big face now that you pointed it out. A lot of rock spirits there.
Hahaha, trust you to say that.
Why can you women never say; "Oh, Stephen we adore your eyesight"!
Always the justification; "Yessss, you are right, but I have also seen something that you didn't" hahaha
Of course I am only joking here, as I simply cannot afford to have a mad Jo on my um tail.
Blessings!
Haha Sir Stephen, we woman cannot let you men get all the credit. Happy wife, happy life. 😃
I love mountains adventure. Always so thrilling!

What a cute surprise, Mr baboon is doing his best to protect his family:)
Howdy sir papilloncharity! Those views from the top of the mountain are amazing and those baboons were very interesting too, that was a good catch!
Thank you Sir Janton, thankfully the baboons were not throwing rocks at the cars. Glad that you enjoyed it!
Oh no! I suppose they do that too? Hopefully that is rare? lol.
Yep! The danger of people feeding them from their cars, as they become frustrated if there is no food coming from the "machines".
Blessings!
Oh, so they attack the machines! I get it. Sounds like human behavior!
That is exactly the problem Jonboy, human behavior.
Blessings!
Right. We could have a perfect world if it weren't for those humans!
A lovely journey! I have to say, I did not see any rocks moving. When I looked closely I saw a baboon!
It's because I couldn't make a video at that distance my friend. But when I first looked it seemed like the rock was moving. Only on the zoom did I pick up that it was a baboon.
Blessings!
