Wisconsin Native Americans

in #esteem5 years ago

@coquiunlimited asked to see some of my old Wisconsin powwow photos. Many of them are old and not worthy of posting here, but I found a few that I don't mind sharing. sysffpn1xb.jpg

The Native Americans in Wisconsin are often Chippewa/Ojibwe.

To give you a clue how old these photos are, the baby in the picture is my nephew and he will turn 16 in October.

Our friend had bells to tie around his legs so that he could sound like an Indian dancer!

See that blue and white striped beaded knife sheath? I made that back when I was doing beading and had given it to him as a gift. I am pretty proud that he still wears it.

Such a wonderful post, @melinda010100 :)

That blue-and-white sheath in the photo, is it still worn today? Wow, that is amazing <3

And that the baby will turn 16 this year is also amazing <3

These are really nice photos, I love the bonds shown through them :)

Thanks, Spidee! I haven't been to a powwow in years, but as far as I know he still wears it. He preformed my daughter's wedding ceremony, but he wasn't wearing weapons during a sacred ceremony. My nephew was just here yesterday...he is ao big! It's hard to he was believed that he was ever that tiny baby! Thanks so much for the helpie cake curation!

Howdy Melinda! love the photos and that knife sheath with the bead work is really great!

Thank you. I gave almost all the beadwork I did away, so it was a pleasant surprise to see that knife sheath here in these old photos.

That's so awesome! And is that your friend who is Chippewa? That's one tribe I know nothing about. Were they farmers or hunter/gatherers?

Anishinabe tribes live all around the a Great Lakes and Canada. The women practiced farming and the men were the hunters and warriors.

Howdy today Melinda! I just got started on steemit for the day, been out mowing so of course I'm way behind again, how's it going with you?
Thanks for the information, so they weren't nomadic but they were both farmers and hunters, they had to be I guess. both, I mean. I bet they were also good fishermen.

I know they gathered wild rice that grows on the lake shores and they collected sap from the maple trees to make maple syrup. They are spearfisher men, and have battled with the state of Wisconsin in court and with local residents to protect their treaty rights so that they can continue to fish. Local fishermen are resentful that the Native Americans have more diverse fishing rights than they do and it has led to violence at the boat landings and people in big boats creating wakes around the smaller boats of the Native fishermen to try to disrupt the number of fish they are able to spear.

oh my gosh Melinda, what is wrong with people?? Or should I say us stupid white people?

Because the same thing happens in the Northwest on the Shoshone reservation where they
can hunt anytime and the local white hunters get all angry and threatening because the whites
can only hunt in seasons.

Dang, it's their land so they should be able to hunt and fish to feed their families whenever they
need to.

That's interesting that rice grows that far North though, I had no idea.

Excellent. We may count ourselves very distant cousins. I was able to trace back our first nation's ancestry to an Ojibwe woman in the mid 18th century. The sheath was lovely.

Thank you! My family lore has it that my distant many greats grandmother was Cherokee, but I have never been able to document that.

Native Americans costumes are really impressive and cool! So bright! And people are so happy at the photos 💛
What a great memories!

I'm a bot. I detect haiku.

Traditions that must be guarded

They do try to recreate them and make it a part of their modern day lives.

the picture is really as good as real😄

Thank you! I'm so glad that you like the photos!

Beautiful images of Native American culture and legendary course. I often read the story "Apache", today you share extraordinary memories, certainly very historic for you and me of course.
Thanks for this , my friend

The tribal members in my photos are from a different region than the Apache and they had many cultural differences because they lived in the woods, not in the desert like the Apache did.

Thanks for finding your old photos of the Pow Wow and posting them. I always love seeing our native people in traditional dress.
Imagine- your nephew, the baby, is now 16 yrs.old. I am impressed with the bead work you did and the knife sheath looks lovely and it’s usable. U&R

Mi'kmaq is the First Nation people of PEI?

Yes, here and Nova Scotia. The name used to be spelled and pronounced Mic Mac but Mi’kmaq is the preferred one.

Hey hey. How are you my friend we missed you? Must be amazing to witness this gathering. It showcases the rich American culture which is so beautiful. Didn't know you did beading as that knife sheath looks so cool. Are there also food during this event?

Thanks for coming by because it reminds to check in with you! I get so busy here that I don't always look to see what my friends are posting!

There is food... Fry bread is always popular. When I had better use of my hands I enjoyed doing beadwork.

Those are soo nice ;) .. thank you for sharing these nice pictures of the native american with us .. it is always nice to see how people try to reenact old cultural worth to bring it to us nowadays ^^

While you are there it is easy to forget that it is a recreation and that all these people will get in their cars and go back to their normal 9 to 5 jobs the next day!

I can't even believe you said not worthy of posting here.
They are really good and historial at that.

I went through and only chose the ones worth sharing! 😉

How beautiful and colorful are their suits ! This was probably a wonderful moment =))

They are colorful! It is fun to hear the drumming and the songs and watch them dance.

These photos are fabulous Mel. The colours are so vibrant and clear. They look as fresh as if they were shot yesterday.

I remember the beading frenzy from years ago and the sheath looks very traditional. Did you have a pattern to follow?

16 years old hey? How time flies.

I copied a pattern that I saw on some artifacts in a museum. It would have been more authentic to some of the Plains Indian tribes, but when he saw it he really wanted that one.

It looked authentic to me but then we don't get taught much if anything about the Native Americans in the UK.
This photo is great with the kids dancing and the full outfit in glorious colour.

We don't get taught much either... I had to learn on my own.
The afternoon portion of this powwow was all about the kids. Telling them stories, and teaching them songs and dancing with them.

These tribal outfits are superb. Such colour and use of natural elements.
They are just incredible. Thanks Mel.

I love these photos! The colours are amazing as are the smiles on the faces! Your bead work is very beautiful too. Thanks for sharing these fabulous memories.

Thanks so much! I am so glad you liked these.

Nice photos. It's hard to get good photos of a pow wow, or at least I found it so. I attended one this year, but they didn't want photos of the ceremony or dances, so I ended up not really taking any.

That's too bad. I have never been to a powwow where they had those restrictions.

Great shots thanks for remembering to share them! Love the native clothing. The baby is adorable is your nephew of Native American roots as well?

Yes, his birthmom was Cherokee and the biological dad was African American. He was given up for adoption at birth.
