Regarding the fierce battle, one of the officers
The Dutch Red Cross on Peunayong bivouac, recounts the report
his eyes, among others as follows 5
:
"The Grand Mosque and the camp in front of him are defended by pre-
jurit of Aceh in the amount of approximately 3000 people. In the amount of
so many of the Acehnese soldiers
face our attack on the battle of 25 December
- Position In very strong maintained in all angles.
Plants protect the forefront of the palace,
so thick that it is impossible to see defense
in the wall or the building.
Yesterday a great battle took place near the Mosque
Great, so great that sometimes their shots
far more powerful than us. Colonel De Roy van Zuyderwijn continues
shouting to our ranks to go on the offensive though
he's got a cut. "
After the Dutch Red Cross officer went on
his report in which he said that their troops made
the strongholds along the left side of the Aceh river are not far from Dalam,
and recounted that their bivouac was a former village
which is desolate because the inhabitants are gone, the cultivation
already living the bushes, while the coconut trees
had been overthrown and dumped for the protection of the soldiers'
Acehnese soldiers survived, then the officer recounted:
"De vijand onderhoudt gedurig een min of meer levendig vuur
op de missigit en hoewel de meeste troepen in een gedekte positie
liggen, vallen er nu en and toch ongelukkige schoten welke hunne
slachtoffers eischen.
"De vijand is moedig, talrijk en niet slechts gewapend
ruim voorzien van ammunitie, hetgeen duidelijk blijkt uit de
hagelbuijen van kogels die hij gedurig op ons afzendt
