Israel launches dozens of rockets into Syria

in #esteem7 years ago

. Syria's state media has reported that the Israeli military has launched dozens of rockets into Syria on Thursday morning (10/5). The rockets destroyed radar installations and crashed into ammunition warehouses.

Earlier, the Israeli military said Iranian troops in Syria had fired at one of their outposts near the border. Damascus residents claim to see a series of explosions over the city from the shelling of the Syrian air defense system.
Tensions between Israel and Iran have threatened a new escalation in Syria. Iran and Shi'ite militias are known to have allied themselves in support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in his war against militants trying to overthrow him.
"The [Syrian] air defense is facing dozens of Israeli rockets and some of these rockets hit targets and destroyed one of the radar," Syrian news agency SANA quoted a military source as saying.
Asked if Israel had invaded the area near Damascus, an Israeli military spokesman said: "I will not comment on it at this time."
Syrian state television broadcast a video recording showing their air defense system firing incoming rockets. Israeli warplanes allegedly fired rockets from outside the Syrian border and targeted the Baath City in Quneitra Province.
A SANA correspondent said the Israeli strikes targeted the Syrian air defense brigade and sought to destroy radar installations. The Lebanese National News Agency, citing the Lebanese Army command, reported Israeli jets circling the Lebanese region on Thursday morning (10/5) before the attack.
Israeli army spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Conricus said earlier that Israel would retaliate against Iranian forces against its posts on the Golan Heights. But he did not elaborate on his statement.
According to Conricus, in the raid about 20 projectiles, most likely rockets, had been fired by Quds Forces, a branch of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, at about 00.10 in the morning. "Some of the rockets have been intercepted by the Israeli Iron Dome air defense system, we do not receive reports of casualties, the amount of damage we are currently scoring is low," he said.
The regional turmoil was triggered by US President Donald Trump's announcement on Tuesday (8/5) regarding US withdrawal from Iran's nuclear deal. Hours later, Israeli rockets immediately targeted a military base in Kisweh.
Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the attack killed 15 people, including eight Iranians. Israel neither confirmed nor denied responsibility for the attack.
