What's at the end of the road? The sun. Many towns have east-west highways, and on two days each year, the Sun rises and sets directly in the middle. Today, in some areas of the world (tomorrow in others), is an equinox. This is a day of equal night ("aequus"-"nox") and day time, as well as a day where the sun rises precisely to the east and sets due west. This image depicts a gorgeous rural road in Alberta, Canada that runs roughly east-west. The highlighted photograph was captured during the September Equinox in 2021, however the geometry is the same every year.In many cultures, the March equinox marks the start of a new season, usually spring in the northern hemisphere and fall in the southern. Does your favorite street run from east to west? You can find out tonight at sunset with a quick glimpse.
