RE: Build An Ecobrick With @sweetpea - An Earth Day Initiative

in #environment6 years ago (edited)

sweetpea, a question: how true is it that over times certain chemicals leach from plastics? Ecobricks sounds like a very innovative idea; I would just want to make sure overuse does
not create another problem. Attached is one NPR story about leaching from plastics: https://www.npr.org/2011/03/02/134196209/study-most-plastics-leach-hormone-like-chemicals

Plastic is made from petro-chemicals and these chemicals do in fact leach. When making an Ecobrick we are simply using plastic that would have ended up in oceans or land, which would have then leached chemicals. By containing it in an ecobrick (plastic bottle), we are preventing the contained plastic from leaching, or at least delaying the leaching process by another 100 years or more. There is no such thing as an overuse of an ecobrick, since the plastic is here anyway!
