Piranha fishing in the Amazon River, Colombia

in #english7 years ago

Have you ever fished a piranha before? Did you even eat it?
Puerto Nariño is a tiny village in the Amazon, far from civilization. Most people are hunters, gatherers or craftsmen.
One day we went fishing with a local. The fishing rod consisted of a wooden pole and a nylon string with a hook. He told us we'll be fishing piranhas with it. We were skeptical.
As a bait we caught small fish, cut them in half and attached them to the rod. We also had the skin of chickens as bait. Apparently the piranhas love that.
As we drove up the river for 2 hours, we anchored the boat in a quiet place directly at a mangrove slope. The mangroves have very small berries, which the fish love when they fall from the mangrove into the water. In addition, the mangroves spend a shadow for the fishs. Lure in, fishing rod out and it didn't last a minute and you could feel that there were fish on the lure. Now just pull quickly enough with a jerk on the fishing rod and look, it was really a piranha.

This piranha was of course still too small and I threw him back into the water.
