PLASTIC EXPRESSION WORKSHOP

I begin this article remembering one of the most important work that i did in the university and I really enjoyed it.

In this subjet, we did three important works, in which we learned techniques of artistic expression clearly linked to painting and sculpture.

In this occasion, I present the first work done, in which we were assigned, to select an impressionist painting. In my case, select one from Claude Monet - San Giorgio Maggiore at dusk.

Later, we had to reinterpret and study the impressionist technique by reproducing this painting in a 20x20 format on opaline and with gouache.

The impressionist technique is characterized by having thick and consecutive brushstrokes, mixtures of colors, superimposed and blurred. When you look closely, they are only stains, but by moving away you can distinguish the figures and shapes of the painting

The original image was cropped so that it could be scaled. A sketch or background was made to form the figures. The colors were prepared as similar as possible to the original selected paint and finally, the lighter to the darker color was started using the thicker tip brush, superimposing colors and blurring.

Subsequently, the same painting was reinterpreted in cubist technique. One of the characteristics was the search for the third dimension.

In this way, with the original image and a sketch paper a breakdown of the painting was made from the colours and with the abstract forms that the painting gave rise to a new interpretation. A scale drawing was made and the same one was made in the format of opaline 20x20cm. Then the colours were prepared and for this technique, fine brushes were used to delineate and blur the colours.

The third technique was the collage, in which different materials were taken, among them, paper of different types (silk, polish, construction and sandpaper) of different colors, cardboard, colored cardboard, fabrics, plastic, candles (wax). A base similar to that of the cubist technique was used but this time playing with the textures of some figures and their reflection and highlighting the light colours. The materials were sealed with hot coloured wax.

Final painting in abstract expressionism and the action painting technique, popular in the 1940s that broke with all the guidelines established by the academy popularized by Jackson Pollock. We also did a group practice in class related to this technique, which I will show in a next post.

For this technique i used a toothbrush and a palette more water was added to the paint to achieve the textures and fluidity, no scaling was done, nor previous sketch of the figures, simply the colors were placed according to the position and shapes of the figures of the painting already studied.

We conclude our presentation with a presentation on a format of 65x65cm in black background cardboard. The formats of the paintings on opaline in 20x20cm.

"I have made great efforts to work in a darker register and express the sinister and tragic quality of the place, given my natural tendency to work in light and pale tones. » Monet.
