PREVENTION OF CORROSION WITH SACRIFICIAL ANODES (Case Study)

in #engineering7 years ago (edited)

Today I discussed Corrosion, this discussion is from the experience of field data during Job training.Hopefully useful for you all, especially for all students.

Introduction

Corrosion is the degradation process in material.

Roberge.P (1999),Corrosion is the destructive attack of a material by reaction with its environment. The serious consequences of the corrosion process have become a problem of worldwide significance. In addition to our everyday encounters with this form of degradation, corrosion causes plant shutdowns.

Many aspects of corrosion and have several types.
The aims of this research is to know the effect of sacrificial anode to steel on ammonia channel pipe connection and type of corrosion in PT.Pupuk Iskandar Muda Aceh Indonesia

What the Catodic Protection

Roberge, P.(2013). Cathodic Protection is one method of corrosion control technology by reversing the direction of corrosion current. Reverses the direction of corrosion current, intended to return electrons that break down of certain metals, which are immune or immune, so that the corrosion of the metal can be reduced or eliminated (not lost). or, is a technique used to control corrosion on metal surfaces by making the metal surface as a cathode of a voltaic cell The aims catodic protection inhibit corrosion rate on steel.

Sacrificial Anodes

Principle of Sacrificial anode.

The process of metal protection against corrosion by giving the bait. The feed is usually a metal whose potential value is more reactive (more negative potential) of a protected metal (more positive potential) through a corrosive electrolyte with conductor connector. The metals used are more reactive such as low carbon steel, aluminum, magnesium and zinc.

Research Methods

The method used in this research is field observation. Analyze the causes and types of corrosion that occur.

Location

Location observation at PT. Pupuk Iskandar Muda (Persero) Aceh Indonesia

Observation result

1. Sacrificial anodes Material

The materials used for sacrificial anodes are : Low carbon steel type AISI 1010

2. Type of Corrosion

a Pipe Inside

Type of corrosion inside the pipe is erossion Corrosion, Due to the flow of the pipe, the liquid ammonia

b. Pipe out side

Type of corrosion is General corrosion

Conclusion

  1. Low carbon Steel Type AISI 1010 is best used as sacrificial anode, because the corrosion rate of low carbon steel is faster than steel in the pipe.
  2. The type of corrosion that occurs is general corrosion and errosion corossion, General corossion going outside the pipe and the inside pipe is erossion Corrossion, caused by the flow inside the pipe.
