১/ গ্রহণঘাত: এই সময় গ্রহন ভালভ খোলা এবং নির্গমন ভালভ বন্ধ থাকে। এই সময় গ্রহণ ভালভ দিয়ে জ্বালানী ও বাতাস (পেট্রোল ইন্জিনে) বা শুধু বাতাস (ডিজেল ইন্জিনে) সিলিন্ডারে প্রবেশ করে। ।এই সময় ক্র্যাকশ্যাফট ১৮০* ঘুর্ণন সম্পূর্ণ করে। এই সময় পিস্টন উপর থেকে নিচের দিকে নামে।
২/ সংকোচন ঘাত: এই ঘাতে দুইটি ভালভই বন্ধ থাকে। পিস্টন নিচের থেকে উপরের দিকে উঠে। এই ঘাতে সিরিল্ডারের ভিতরে তাপ ও চাপ উৎপন্ন হয়। ক্র্যাকশ্যাফট মোট ৩৬০* ঘুর্ণন সম্পূর্ণ করে।
৩/ শক্তিঘাত: এই ঘাতে দুইটি ভালভই বন্ধ থাকে। এই ঘাতে সিলিন্ডারে স্পার্কিং হয়ে (পেট্রোল ইন্জিনে) উচ্চ চাপে জ্বালানী স্প্রে হয়ে (ডিজেল ইন্জিনে)দহন ক্রিয়া সম্পূর্ণ করে শক্তি উৎপন্ন করে। এবং পিস্টনকে নিচের দিকে ধাক্কা দেয়। তাই পিস্টন উপর থেকে নিচের দিকে নামে। শুধু এই ঘাতে শক্তি উৎপন্ন হয় বাকি ঘাত গুলোকে চালাই। তাই একে শক্তি ঘাত এবং বাকি গুলোকে অলস ঘাত বলে। এই ঘাত শেষে ক্র্যাকশ্যাফট মোট ৫৪০* ঘুর্ণন সম্পূর্ণ করে।
৪/ নির্গমণ ঘাত: এই ঘাতে গ্রহণ ভালভ বন্ধ এবং নির্গমণ ভালভ খোলা থাক। পিস্টন নিচ থেকে উপরের উঠে। এবং সকল পোড়া গ্যাস বাইরে বার করে দেয়। এই ঘাত শেষে ক্র্যাকশ্যাফট মোট ৭২০* ঘুর্ণন সম্পূর্ণ করে। এর পরে আবার প্রথম থেকে ঘাত শুরু হয়। এই ভাবে ইন্জিন চলতে থাকে।
