The first original emojis were released in 1999 and they were 176, now we're talking about a number that goes over 3000 and is going to always increase. Google has just launched a new project in this area, introducing 53 new characters that will initially only be present on Pixel smartphones and after all Android Q-compatible devices.
The new emojis are neither masculine nor feminine, they are actually Google's attempt to simplify the more universal emoji keyboard. The current approach is not intuitive with these characters and you risk getting lost in looking for one, having the possibility to choose skin tones and gender. Another problem is that emoji drawings sometimes have different genres between different platforms, not generalizing the Unicode character: the design of Google for the sauna person is female, but the character is male on iOS. This means that when sent from one device to another, emoji can change.
Google's new approach, initially tested on Android Pie, is to create designs that could be both male and female, representing the character with generic signs: some have medium-length hair and are genderless, while in Dracula's emoji the bow tie and the choker have been eliminated in favor of a chain.
This kind of communication isn't easy to implement, Google designer Jennifer Daniel said: "We can't avoid race, gender, any other things in culture and class, what we're trying to do is find the meanings that suggest that emoji can be both male and female, or neither male nor female."
