Regarded as abstractions, they come from concepts relating to nature and represent types of energy. They stand at the center of creation and carry the primary archetypal energies that exist in all things. According to British psychologist, professor, and author David Fontana (1934–2010), many ancient people regarded the elements as “energy forces that sustained the world.” 31 The elements also represented the three states of matter (earth, solid; water, liquid; air, gas) and the agent of transformation of matter (fire).
From ancient times to the Renaissance, the elements were believed to relate to the human condition, health, and personality traits. Because ancient philosophers and scientists regarded humans as the universe in miniature, it was believed that the physical body held within it the essence of all cosmic elements.
The four elements were viewed as the building blocks and organizing principles of the world. As such, they have been described as the manifestation of consciousness in nature and as the vibration of nature and spirit.
