I am a Math teacher for 13 year old learners. Making sure everybody understands the work explained to them can be very difficult - learners who just give up by looking at a sum, not putting in any effort or to try at least.
In our curriculum we have a time-limit to explain, do and assess the work done.
Now, the problem I am having at this moment, is that some of these learners can't do the work from the previous year yet, yet they are sitting in my class now, eyes as big as watermelons when I explain the new work to them.
What happened in the school system that learners are just passed on to the next grade, as they can not even do half of what is expected of them in the previous grade? Where are the teacher-learner-lets-work-together attitude when we were in school.
I mean, we came into the class, sat and listened to the teacher who had knowledge of Mathematics and tried to make every lesson as exciting as possible.
Yes!! me too, I am also trying to be the best possible Maths teacher of this school.
I am explaining my work to the best of my ability, I am patient with my learners, as I too, know how difficult mathematics can be.
I only started understanding mathematics in high school - because of my teacher who tried her best pushed me to where I am now - and succeeded.
I am going to make a difference in my class. I am going to be the one who listens, helps, help with work they did not understand from their previous grade. I will be patient and explain, explain again until everyone can do it.
I will make time to do this!!!
I want to be the reason for better results!!
I want to be the reason why they love maths!!
I am going to be different from their previous teacher!!
I am not expecting miracles the first day, believe you me, but why can we not try at least?
If you listen in my class, respect each other, work when I tell you to, we will get along just fine.
