Class activities to teach children about 'Discrimination' and 'Stereotypes'

in #education7 years ago

Even though this is something that we might think doesn't happen as often as before, there is still a huge problem all around the world with Stereotyping and Discrimination .

All children have the right to be treated fairly and equally but this does not always happen and sometimes they are treated in ways that go against these rights.

Can you see how these children are being stereotyped?

To think certain things about a person just because of how they look, or because they belong to certain race, sex or social class, is called stereotyping.

Class Activity:

  • Have the children work in a group and talk about what kinds of stereotypes is shown above.
  • Talk about what you think each of the children in the stories should say or do about being stereotyped.
  • Sometimes it is not easy for children to stand up for themselves. Why do you think this is?

When you treat people unfairly because they are different from you, it is called discrimination.

Can you see how these children are being discriminated against?

Class Activity:

Work with a partner.

  • What kinds of discrimination did the children in the stories face?
  • How do you think each of the children feels?
  • Choose one story and then write a paragraph saying what you think that child can do to fight the discrimination they are facing.

This happens way to often and never where teachers can see it.

Such a harsh world we live in, we are even too afraid to send our kids to school because even children can say the most hurtful things.
