Understanding Exponents

An exponent tells us how many times a number is multiplied by itself.
To understand the concept in full you need to know how an exponent is written, the terminology used to describe an exponent and what each part represents.

Let us begin...

Exponent 1.jpg

Definition of an exponent.

Exponent 2.jpg

We read an exponent as a base to a power/exponent.

Exponent 3.jpg

What does the base and the power/exponent tell me about an exponent?

Exponent 4.jpg

Here is an example.

Exponent 5.jpg

To read an exponent you will first state its base then its power/exponent.

Exponent 6.jpg

This is the basic concept of an exponent.
Easy!

Let us advance a little further.

There are 3 terminology used in questionnaires when dealing with exponent.

They are:
*Expand
*Simplify
*Exponential Form

It is important to learn and understand what they mean and to use the correct methodology.

Let us understand what it means to expand.

Examples:

Exponent 8.jpg

What did you notice?

(The number was stretched out....)

Let us understand what it means to simplify.

Exponent 9.jpg!

Examples:

Exponent 10.jpg

What did you notice?

(I calculated the answer...)

Let us understand what it means to write in exponential form.

Examples:

Exponent 12.jpg

What did you notice?

(I wrote a base to a power....)

Let us collate this into one "memory peg" poster.
