The need to recognize the environment that surrounds us was born in man from its inception, as our first parents observed the light as that "element" that came from the eye, addressing with this an affirmative thought that without the existence of sight, no there would be light, it was understood that the light was like an "invisible octopus", that it reaches an object that touches it and its form is distinguished ... what a wrong thought for then.
Children often ask how can they observe colors? How is it possible that you can see through the glass a color? Well, in this opportunity we will respond as children. In the first place we must know how light travels, light propagates in empty space or by air in a straight line, as long as it does not have an obstacle in its path, and has the ability to move with a speed of 300,000 kilometers per second; Amazing indeed! There is nothing in the world that goes faster. Let me explain something else; the amount that indicates the speed of light in the air, is called refraction of the substance.
In addition, there is a phenomenon called refraction of light, which indicates that light passes from one object to another with different variation. I explain it to you in another way, when we place a branch in the water, we visualize it bent or with waves, this is the refraction of light. After all this is exposed, we will answer the questions raised in the previous paragraphs.
How can I observe the colors?
Light is an energy, an electromagnetic spectrum that can be captured by sight, that is, an electro passing through a high or low energy called a photon, which creates waves, which we can observe as the different colors that form in a inverted image in the retina of the eye. For example, now if we observe an apple we would see that it is red, but in reality we are visualizing the electromagnetic spectrum contemplated in it, I explain it to you this way, white light is composed of the radiation of all colors and when reflected in an object composed of any substance, this object absorbs some waves and reflects others, reflecting the waves of its color and that is why we affirm that the apple is red.
How is it possible that they can see through the glass a color?
When we reflect light on an object, we see it decomposed in different colors according to the incidence it has, this is another phenomenon called light scattering. More than 3 centuries ago the physicist Isaac Newton studied this for the first time, using a prism (piece of glass) and this resulted in white light being a composition of all colors and propagating at different speeds, for example the Violet color possesses a higher speed than the color red. Remember this the next time you observe a rainbow, since this is a scattering of light, because the drops of water that remain in the atmosphere serve as prisms that reflect the sun, (the white light) and decompose in all the colors forming a rainbow.
We can understand, that the colors that we visualize in a glass is simply the decomposition of the waves that travel at different speeds, which we perceive thanks to our vision.
It's all for today my friends, we read in a next installment.
