Preparing Food For My Grandma’s Funeral | Thai Tradition | Vlog #39

in #dtubedaily7 years ago

Hey guys,

In today’s vlog I share with you some of the food that is being prepared for my grandmas funeral.

Family members gather together to make banana and sticky rice. The rice is mixed with sugar and coconut, whilst the bananas are sliced thinly to be wrapped and tied into banana leaves, after which they are steamed.

We are preparing thousands of these so they can be handed out to guests.

Grateful to my mum for capturing some footage. I think she is slowing figuring out what this whole vlogging thing is about. 😂

I hope you enjoy watching some of this beautiful cultural I am lucky to be apart of.

Biggest love to you! | neeQi 🍌🍚

Cool video! What exactly do you do with the sea-rice? Do you just eat it as a whole, including the wrapping or just the rice?

Thanks! @kingfredrickvi. The banana leaf is used as wrapping. You just eat the rice. It’s pretty sweet with the banana. 😊

Thanks for sharing - very fascinating.
Are those termites ( the edible insects).. I've eating roasted termites before and they tasted great hehe.

They definitely are. I was pretty resistant towards trying them, first because insects and second because I’m a vegetarian. But my family think I don’t eat so they are always insistent so sometimes I just have to give in! Definitely wasn’t as bad as I thought. More just a mental game then anything haha.

@neeqi I'm so sorry to hear about your grandmother. My condolences go out to you and your family. Where in Thailand are you?

Exactly - even if it is some month back: my & steemit community condolences as well. Stay strong!
Thanks for sharing the tradition.
Note: I immediately identified you on the pictures... - joking of course :)

Thanks @endurance1968. 💛 That’s very sweet of you.
Also I thought you could totally guess it was me haha.

Thank you @axios. ❤️ She passed at the end of last year by we are finally returning her back to rest in Thailand. I’m currently in Udon Thani, up in the north. ☺️

Aw that sounds so beautiful. It's cool that you have some roots in Thailand.

Enjoy your time there! I'll be moving to Chiang Mai for 6-9 months around November :)

Yeah I am very grateful to be apart of this wonderful cultural.

Also I have family in Chiang Mai, it’s a pretty great place too. What is prompting the move? I’m sure you’ll have a great time!

Oh cool! So I was sick for a week and then when I pulled out of that I suddenly felt super inspired to go there. It kind of came out of nowhere but I've been getting a lot of signs to head in that direction so I'm doin it!

Nice! Following the intuitive pull. I’m sure only good things will come from an adventure like that! How’s your Thai haha?

i pray for your grand mother. .dear...neeki.. thanks for sharing this post...

Thanks Afrin, it means a lot. 💗

yeah..dear...welcome..

You are a beautiful girl :)

Well you’re a beautiful person! Thanks. 😊

Nice to see a family event like this, thank you for sharing love :)

I'm pretty sure I have had this dish you are preparing. Super Tasty!!

When is your mom joining steemit! You've already have her narrating your vlogs hahaha :D

Glad you enjoyed it. Yeah it’s a pretty typical dish. Sometimes you get it with mango instead of bananas. Hahah it would be amazing to see Mum navigate something like Steemit. She just started filming on her own terms I hadn’t even asked her.

I think when I had it was simple just sticky rice and sugar, I don't remember there being any fruit inside. Then again my memory could easily be failing me in the moment :)

I recon she would be pretty good at it actually. Probably would be a lot of steepshots of Simba though hahaha 😸

Now I'm hungry!. Did you know in Venezuela we have a typical food called 'hallaca' that is prepared in a similar way, (well the only similarity is that we wrap the corn flour in banana leaves). Wow after this video my urge to visit Thailand has increased!. Thank you for this window to your culture. And my condolences for your grandma's passing. Although I believe death must be celebrated, maybe this is what you do as well?.
