A quick step-by-step tutorial on how you can reduce the size of your videos by up to 90% and save DTube & yourself storage space, time and ultimately money.
The only things you need are your video file + the awesome free media player VLC
Yesterday it helped me to reduce the size of my video from 1,4 GB to around 150 MB with little to no losses in quality - Try yourself and enjoy way faster uploads in the future!

Nice, Ive used Handbrake in the past. Ive switched from VLC to MPC-HC years ago due to VLC not being able to keep track of position when closing out videos. Not sure if this still applies.
Worked fine for me, video is synched well!

Das gleiche Problem hatte ich eben auch, bis ich gesehen habe das ich einen "Snap" erstellen bzw. hochladen und hinzufügen muss - danach gings weiter an die Blockchain. Ich hoffe das ist die Lösung für dein Problem! :P

I don't know that software - Nearly everybody has VLC, at least from people I know, so I thought this would be helpful to many ;)

Honestly, I have no clue - But if I would have to guess, I would say the desktop version has way more functions and therefore it might not be possible on iOS. Happy to hear different though ;)

Wie gesagt zuerst Safari. Das ging nicht und wurde mir von ein paar steemians auch bestätigt, dass Safari zicken macht.
Chrome war als nächstes dran...doch nachdem ich mal nach 1 Std aus dem dtube raus bin um ne what’s app zu lesen, brach alles zusammen und nix war mehr auf dtube.
Dann hätte ich Firefox allerdings am huawei Tablet! Ich dachte “Probier Ma Microsoft” könnt ja klappen...5 std upload....bzw die Info: wird an blockchain übertragen...!

When I saw how desktop in translated in german when you tried to save your file it made me laugh :)) "writing desk" sounds very funny in comparison to desktop. Probably because I don't know enough german :)

Reducing the file size makes such a difference in the upload times. Like you said, you don’t really lose that much quality and the content gets posted without any hiccups. I think the main cause of new user frustration is the wait times and upload issues but Dtube is still young. The more we work with it, the better it will become. Great post man!

Ich habe die ganze Zeit auf das Argument gewartet, warum es Geld spart... Nunja, ich glaube kaum jemand lädt Videos dieser Größenordnung über Mobile Daten hoch. Ich hoffe es zumindest, sollte man keine Flatrate haben.
Ich bin auch erst seit heute auf d.tube und freue mich auf neuen spannenden Content von dir.

Cooler Tipp, VLC überrascht mich immer wieder mit seinem Funktionsumfang. Bei den Videos, die ich bisher hochgeladen habe, war die Dateigröße okay, aber ich werde mal ausprobieren, was da noch so drin ist.

I use HandBrake. I didn't realise VLC could do this too. Nice one, I may have to try it to see if the resulting size is even smaller.
I believe it achieves the smaller size with minimal loss in quality because it finds the pixels that don't change and replaces them with a function instead of displaying each pixel. In a very simple way say your video is s something like
11111111111111111111 (so that's 20 1's in 20 boxes)
It's changed to something like
1 x 20 (so that's 2 boxes instead of 20 )
The more whitespace your video has, the more it will compress nicely.

I have always loved VCL media player! Light, simple and free program. I had no idea it had a feature to resize videos. I will have to try it out, as I do intend to make more videos for YouTube. Thank you for the great tip @theaustrianguy I will definitely up vote and follow!
You can also reduce the size of your video by using this software called HandBrake. It doesn't reduce the quality either and I remember I had an 8 gigabyte mp4 file and reduced it to atleast 400 megabytes.
You always loose quality when you reencode a video (or audio). Something as a lossless encoding way that will still reduce the size doesn't exists. Also it's not HandBrake itself that does the work, it's x264, x265, vpx or any other encoder you select in it. And to get back to the original topic, x264 and x265 are both made by VideoLAN, the organisation that also made VLC. :)
Eine Verringerung um ca. 90 % ist schon krass, wusste gar nicht die Unterschiede zwischen den einzelnen Videocodecs doch so stark ist.
Allerdings müsste man dies doch schon direkt im Videoeditor auswählen können, oder? Würde von VLC aufgrund der zahlreichen Sicherheitslücken abraten.
Trotzdem gutes Video hilft sicher vielen die noch mit 16k oder schlechter ausgestattet sind :), hast mein ⇑.
Oehm mal so eine Frage meinst du mit 16k einen upstream von 16kbps? Also dafuer brauchst du schon ein Modem aus den 80igern. Falls du nur irgendwie die Zahl 16 im Kopf hattest, meinst du wahrscheinlich 16 Mbps downstream mit normalem DSL. Upstream hat normales DSL nur 1 Mbps.

Why don't you use the video settings (that will make the quality much worse) in the program you've rendered the original video? Also you could use a more modern codec like H.265 or VP9, these have in average the double of the quality in the same file size (or the half file size, keeping the same quality) as H.264 or VP8. The only disadvantage is that rendering will cost much more time. Another thing is that not all especially older mobile devices will be able to play the file, but since dtube will render a H.264 480p version they'll be able to play that.
The question would be .. how do encode your video beforehand? I already use a h.264 codec. In which case the video should not get smaller if encoded with it again. At least not without loss. If you re-render smth it will always lose quality. If you can see it directly or not.
