Lol i just looked it up, apparently the soft shell makes them faster in the water and on land. This is why he ran so fast.

Makes sense. His running speed was impressive
It's still pretty tough but flexible at the same time. It resembles a smooth thick leather some people call them leatherbacks. Who knows what the evolutionary mechanism is that let them develop a softer shell.
