Every time we have a few inches of snow in England everything just stops. Our infrastructure is just not up to the job and every time it does snow every news media outlet jumps on the band wagon to spread a load of fear uncertainty and doubt (FUD)
Why do they do it?
Because people swarm to bad news for very good psychological reasons. People need to know what the situation really is so that they can prepare and adapt to the new circumstances.
The only problem with this approach is that the news is so sensationalized that many people just panic and start emptying the shops of food and water and because the roads are impassable, this can lead to shortages in some shops which again feeds back into the panic. Again reported by the main stream media.
The solution?
Turn off the news and look out of your window. If it is snowing. Stay home if you are lucky enough to have one. Imagine the desperate situation of those people on the streets with nowhere to go for shelter.
That is the real story that should be getting our attention.

I think the way snowy conditions are dealt with in different towns and cities depends on how much of this weather they get and the budgets available for the clean up. A city like Boston copes very efficiently with a snow storm so life doesnt slow down for very long. But when my daughter lived in Montreal which also gets a lot of snow every year she felt like the city was very slow to clear the sidewalks and streets. ( No slight on Montreal I think its a beautiful city with some ridiculously good food.)
This is England lol we're supposed to be organised.
Yeh but you like your days off ;-)
Only in the summer lol
Yeh of course haha
"We don't have a climate, we have weather!" yes, that is UK in a nutshell lol ;-) We really don't understand snow do we, no matter how many times we get it, to our infrastructure it's always like some randomly appearing anomaly that requires everything to go into shutdown mode.
I was actually surprised that the schools in my area were open, they only closed on that one day when it came down really really heavy! The news had like a "war room" affair setup with real time maps and red warning and amber warning markers lol; anyone would think the world had ended.
Absolutely, I wonder about those who are on the streets; but on my local news they reported that charities had pooled their resources and were actually out looking for homeless people and urging them to got to one of the shelters for food and warmth... That's how news should be :-)
I totally agree. There should be no one left out on the streets in this weather and in this day and age. It's inhuman and a downright disgrace that people have to rely on charities when there is more than enough for everyone!
Buckingham Palace has 700 empty bedrooms...700! in the middle of London. They could be put to better use.
It truly is ridiculous when media forecasts large amounts of snow resulting in people panicking and running to buy stockpiles of groceries, bottled water, ice salt and supplies....
But what I find much worse is when meteorologists get it wrong and do not predict a snow or icestorm, causing highway shutdowns, students stuck at schools, passengers detained at airports and, sadly, avoidable fatalities.
A few years ago in January of 2014, it snowed a measly 2 inches of snow in Atlanta, Georgia. The city was totally unprepared and the resulting clusterfuck was unbelievable. The light snowfall in Georgia shut down its capital's traffic, creating an unspeakably horrible gridlock that lasted as long as 18 hours. You can read about it here, it's worth the click: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.buzzfeed.com/amphtml/alisonvingiano/incredible-images-of-atlanta-essentially-shutting-down-after
You make a valid point about being fortunate and blessed to have a roof over your head.
I for one love the snow! Take care -- great post and fantastic photos! @molometer❄
Yep the same story here every time it snows. Totally unprepared and as you say a complete screw up all around. Interesting article btw. We had a motorway which turned into a massive car park and people were stuck in the snow gridlocked for 18 hours? It's ridiculous that these things still happen. Poor planning.
Beast from the East... in Finland we just call it Thursday.
lol love that video, the Snow Cannon and the Siberian Bear and the Finns call it Thursday. What a wonderful world on nonsense we live in?
i love the way you tell us the real story about the snow beast which comes from the east snow storm.. @molometer
it happens many times that snow beats came in snow storms but i was thinking its not true but now i think they are in real ?
It's just frozen water and snow comes and it goes. Nothing to be scared of :)
We will probably get 3 to 6 inches today 39 miles inland may get up to 2 feet if snow
That is quite deep compared to what we are getting here. I visited my cousin in Buffalo NY at the beginning of winter in '79 and they had 6 foot snowfall and everyone just got their snowplows attached to their trucks and went out and cleared it in a couple of hours.
Ohh yes they are used to it in that area that’s quite common
Our weather has been crazy here for a couple of years now. I wish we got snow as little as you do but that said, we don't get as much as some states do.
This past winter for me has been insane. I live in a lake effect region and we get 100" +/- 20" each season. We are pretty used to getting quite a bit but it's always over reacted to.
Yeah the 'news' media go all out like it's the end of the world. Overkill!
Could not agree more.
I agree with you. Sometimes, news are just so terrible. They didn't spread just information but makes people panic as well. Just stay safe and be prepared.
That's right, just look out the window. If it's snowing? Stay inside. We don't need all the fuss.
I made a decision not too long ago to stay mostly away from main stream media ... my sanity has returned. LOL. Great post. molometer.
That is a very sensible thing to do @prydefoltz Most of the 'news' you have no control over. What you really need to know is right in front of you. We just have to observe.
I agree. And if I do I make sure I watch / reference multiple sources and stay open minded.
nice picture and video shared by you friend. i never seen this live snow areas.
We don't get 'live' snow that often lol
