Basically, it's quite simple (who would have thought so?): a board, enough padding, a nice fabric, some staples, and a few hours in front of you and the trick and play!
What you need:
- A 2.8 cm thick and standard size MDF board (1m22 x 2m44)
- Wadding (3m x 210 cm - 330 gr/m)
- 5 buttons
- Fabrics
- Screws
- A tapestry stapler
- A pencil
- A ruler
- Scissors
& time...
Total cost: 115.38 euros ! A Bed header costs normaly fews hundread euros.... up to one thousand! Hours spent at construction just under 10 hours.
The steps
1. Gathering the gear
Gather the material before you start (otherwise, your headboard will be dragging in your living room for a week. In the best of cases).
2. Create a plan of the headboard structure
In my case, I wanted a headboard of the same width. We often see them sticking out of bed. Makes a style. It's up to you to choose what you like best.
My bed is 160 cm wide. The board has the same width.
And for the height of the headboard, I first tested the desired height by putting sticky paper at the height I wanted above my bed to get an idea of what it would represent. I decided to make it go over the bed by 75 cm.
I opted for a 120 cm high headboard: 20 cm behind the upholsterer + 25 cm behind the mattress + 75 cm in my back. To this, I added 15cm of feet to the headboard, the same size as the feet of my bed.
The MDF board is therefore 160cm x 120cm.
For the feet, these are two boards of MDF cut in 1m20 x 15 cm. The feet are attached to the back of the large MDF board. 15cm protruding from the large MDF board downwards.
3. Determine the length of bed headboard required to cover the headboard
My headboard measures 120x160cm. I therefore needed at least this size + a little play on all sides to be able to cover the fleece (without flattening it) and staple the fabric to the back of the headboard.
I took 200x160cm of natural linen bought from Dog Dogs (Green Dogs fabrics but special furnishings).
I took advantage of this opportunity to buy the necessary fabric for the bed skirt... But I haven't yet taken action!
Tip: How to choose your fabric?
It's best to take a stroll through the shops and see which materials you like best. Caution: Take furniture fabric because it is stronger than clothing fabric. The fabric will be stretched and stapled, so it must be resistant to avoid loosening or tearing due to pressure.
What could have been added: a fabric to close the back of the headboard. It's just a bonus, but if you're a perfectionist, it's worth it.
Anyway! How proud to have been able to create a headboard. We could have bought a ready-made one, but it would never have been the same! And what comfort! Really, really, really, really! It's nice to be able to land against a warm, fleecey thing (unlike a cold, hard wall). For the time it takes and the difficulty, sincerely, I advise you to get started! On the other hand, check your measurements carefully and go for two if possible (otherwise, have strength or good gear).

Good luck !
