the submit thing just spins and spins when I click submit but I never get to the next screen or whatever or an error message.

Have you tried to click advanced setings , and fill steemit content body?
I didn't know what to put in there
you put there the info that you want to appear in your steemit post, all the text you see in this post was put in that window, and in video description I put some extra info about my painting
