Character Drawing Process (Procreate with iPad)

Lot's of people was asking me to show full video of my work process. I've just found this old one created in 2014 but it is still actual and I can say nothing much changed from that time in my style of working. Here is the video and detailed text explanations with screenshots.

Sketching

Sketching is the first step which is the most important. Without cool sketch I can not start. I will have no inspitation. When I have nice sketch ready I got the feeling to color it immideately. I've done these sketches with pen on paper in my sketching book and during the long 8 hours flight started to play with for the New iPad 4 Retina and Wacom Intuos Creative Stylus 1. This iPad was the prize we won with my wife together. I've sent her illustration for Payoneer debit cards contests, asked my facebook friends to like that post and it got over 150 likes so we won it but completely had no clue what to do with it since we both was working on Macbook Pros that time and was satisfied with it.

00.png

So I've chosen this sketch to play with. Actually I don't know why I liked it :P But I thought it's cool and anyway I had nothing to do flying long way through all the Russia from Saint Petersburg to my hometown where I was born in Far East, Khabarovsk. It's near Japan by the way and people are kidding about bears on the streets but this is true. It's rare but still it happens. In winter time hungry bear may wake up and go to the city looking for food entering supermarkets. A bear or a wild pig.

Sorry... I've chosen this sketch.

02.png

Made the sketch as a Multiplied layer on top of others and made it transparent for 20-30%. Then I've started to add layers filling them with solid shapes.

03.png

I was trying to check different brushes and then my wife took an iPad and added the mustache to that guy. We laughed, I loved that and added some Georgian hat (I though so at that time).

04.png

I've decided to leave that mustache and continue adding details. Locked the layer transparency, switched the brush transparency for about 20% and started to add lights and shadows.

05.png

And some details as well...

06.png

Than thought of changing his shirt color to match the hat.

07.png

I had to add more layers with food and vegetables but iPad 4 memory is limited if you draw on A4 paper format it allows you to have only 8 layers. So I had to flatten few old layers together to add new one and continue.

08.png

Drawing food in the plane is something... Usually during the 8 hours flight there are two meals but still I was always looking for snacks.

09.png

Then I've started to add that blue tint to make it look more colorific and realized that it's not a hat but a vegetable - marrow or how do call that? Cocozelle?

10.png

This was the final. I've added transparent texture on top with soft light overlay.

11.png

How do you like it?

P.S. Same things you can draw even with your finger but you will spend little bit more time. Best thing which I've tried for drawing such a characters and simple illustrations is iPad Pro with Apple Pencil for now in my oppinion. The word "Tutorial" in the preview made with that Pencil by the way.

Wow!!! I have been waiting for this for so long..
Thank you big bro @dunsky for sharing this...
Lemme go and acquire some skills.

Haha :) You're welcome!

Joined! Thanks for invite!

Hi, @dunsky! You know, I am still pissed that you didn`t won in the @SteemKitten contest. No, not pissed, just mad. That sh*t was 100% rigged. xD

Anyhow, I like reading articles and watching videos about how things are made. From simple gears to high art. Because even if it seems so easy to do, in reality it takes an unbelievable amount of knowledge, effort, skill and sometimes creativity to produce. I should say that, though I work in a field in no way connected with creativity and art, I know that work of illustrator or any creator is not a joke. And reading your post simply proved it.

By the way, I used to work with Armenian, who looked a lot like the character your drew. No kidding, true story. I wish I could prove it to you with a photo. He had the same potatoe-shaped face and moustaches. Though no fur under lower lip, and no hat. xD

Will be waiting for more tutorial like this one from you, @dunsky!

I've decided not to participate in any contests anymore because I always fail if I am not invited personally. Will draw something useful for the community instead. Thank you for your support!

You are absolutely right about work.

Armenians are our brothers, Armenia is close to the border of Russia and in Soviet Union we all had been living in one country in fact.

Haha... yeah it was totally rigged man :P

I always fail if I am not invited personally.

I think you failed because you were too good actually ;)

are you on discord?

it was totally rigged

I didn't said that and even not meant that :) No, I am in Telegram only.

hehe, sorry, I was just picking up on the joke by @moviebuff above:

That sh*t was 100% rigged. xD

What I meant to express is that I totally loved your kittens. I'd brand a cuddle bot with your designs any day... doesn't have to be a kitten for that matter :P

If you do want to collab - let me know :D

and discord is really good for steemit - I think most steemit groups use discord as a real time communications tool. If you decide to sign up, let me know :D

These days few people mentioned Discord so I've decided to register there with my email filipp.dunsky@gmail.com (I think you can find me by email there, right?)

I don't think search by email works, it needs the username and the 4-digit code I think?!

First of all, thank you for this tutorial. I love (digital) art. Does originalworks work for you? I tried it for one of my posts, but nothing happened 🤔 Maybe it wasn't original enough. But yours should be, doesn't it?

Thank you :) Sometimes it works, someone's not but I call it just for fun actually. It gives almost nothing.

The @OriginalWorks bot has determined this post by @dunsky to be original material and upvoted it!

Спасибо большое! :)

I love timelapses. I did one in 3D on my channel. Maybe if you want one of your characters in 3D, we could do something!

Yes, we could try collaboration. It would be nice to see my character in 3d.

Yeah! It takes time but I've done some for my brothers designs. He really enjoys the results. Keep up the good art!

Your publications are always a breath of inspiration, love for what to do and incredible illustrations, now it's time to learn a little more by watching this video... great didactic! (:

Thanks! Glad to be helpful :)

Incredible design illustration work @dunsky~ It's awesome that you are using iPad Pro's Apple Pencil to create such beautiful art! You have absolutely inspired me to get back to my own design artwork now haha...haven't been doing my own art for a little while. And I thought that you did this out of Wacom! Keep up your great work~

I like to inspire others, thank you for your comment! Well I can do same things with Wacom tablet also. I've tried and worked for a long time with almost everything for drawing on the market.

@dunsky which software and medium do you enjoy the most for your art illustrations? It's amazing that you have worked with everything that's out in the market! That's definitely professionism at work here lol. Upvoted your post to support~

Right now it's nice to work in iPad Pro with Procreate application but since I'm Photoshop worker for 10 years I get used to it so same may say about Surface Pro but it's less precise rather than iPad.

Your post has been upvoted & resteemed by the Steemit Art Register sponsored by @spaceginger.

Thankyou for being a part of this amazing group!

wow, this is good @dunsky

thanks!

Ha! I love how you turned the hat into a veggie! And I love your use of colors and brushwork as always :D

Haha! That was unexpected for me also!

great job.

thanks.
