Betty Boop - Dizzy Dishes 1930

in #dtube5 years ago

Originally aired August 9, 1930. Talkartoons. 720p. This is the first appearance of Betty Boop in a cartoon, drawn as a French Poodle with Human characteristics. Her character features long, floppy dog-ears, jowls, and a black button nose. She is shown here at her heaviest, as her figure is slimmed down in subsequent cartoons. During her performance, the animators have her changing form and proportion quite fluidly. The actual main character of this cartoon is Bimbo the Dog, as we get our first glimpse of his future love interest.

Margie Hines, at the age of 17 provides the voice of Betty Boop, hired for this one-shot to record the cover of a song previously sung by Helen Kane. She was the winner in a local Helen Kane impersonation contest sponsored by Paramount Pictures held in Brooklyn.

Description edited from text on Betty Boopedia (https://bettyboop.fandom.com/wiki/Diz...

The cartoon begins with a chorus of singing flapper cats. Bimbo waits on a hungry Gus Gorilla and then goes to the kitchen to prepare the order, roast duck. When he is about to bring it to the table, he sees the anthropomorphic French Poodle-esque caricature of Helen Kane performing a "Boop-Oop-a-Doop" song onstage, and falls in love at first sight. He completely forgets about his hungry customer and dances onstage with the duck. The gorilla gets furious and begins to chase after Bimbo, who escapes on a wooden train.
