"Wind Blown" [graphite/oil]

in #dtube7 years ago (edited)

Hey guys, so this was a piece I finished a few weeks ago but am finally get up on Steemit. I was scrolling through Instagram and came across this picture and it was one of those times that something inside of me yelled, "You have to do this!".....and so I did! I asked the owner of the photo on Instagram if she minded if I used it to which she happily obliged.

Hair has always been a bit daunting for me; it was one of the more difficult things for me to grasp and get "good at" in my pursuit of improving my art skills. Basically, it took getting my mind to seeing hair as just blocks of highlights and shadows - once you get the main blocks, then you can go into further detail and render it better. I'll be doing more in depth videos of my processes in the future (once I get a better camera, which I think is coming soon thanks to winning the "trial by comics" contest which @kommienezuspadt hosts, and as he pointed out the 25 SBD right now is worth a little over $300 USD! So a big thanks to him for putting on that contest and all the winnings from that will go toward a new camera which will be a very tangible way that the steemit community is helping each other out and that camera will allow me to do my part to give back to the steemit community with hopefully some insightful art tutorials for those wanting to learn traditional art! :) )

Anyone who does art and is only using a phone camera to take pictures of their art will understand the unbelievable level of frustration when you take the picture and load in into the comp only to see all the contrast and such completely lost :( - can't wait for that new camera....

Here are a few short videos spliced together that I made for my Instagram - these are in no particular order. I will be doing much more in depth videos about my processes in the future! (this is also my first time using dtube!)

I'm not sure why but there is a short 10 second delay at the start of the video...

Short little videos I made for my Instagram page.

I mostly used the "dry brush" method for this but I used some graphite in various places where it would be too hard for a bulky brush to work and for strands of the hair - but most of the hair is dry brush and then I take an eraser to remove the larger dry brush strokes to make the appearance of strands.

I love the movement and her expression. Gorgeous art.

thank you very much; the movement of the hair was the thing that worried me the most when I first started it - making sure that I captured the "wind"

Nice job, looks awesome :)

Wow! Very realistic!:D

Your drawing is very good. It actually reminds me of this drawing in Milwaukee Museum. The art is "Nancy" by Chuck. This art is very detailed and you can even see her freckles. I wonder if you want to get to this level of details too. Just a thought.

I'm not so worried about details; I used to try to do an ultra realistic style but then I realized it wasn't nearly as fun as trying to make it more "creative" and different from a photograph. thanks for stopping by :)

First, CONGRATULATIONS! on winning trial by comics!! I feel very happy for you. Second, this piece is awesome! And I really love seeing your process, always a treat to see the magic in action. Third, you have been putting in some serious work, and it shows - keep it up! Your blog is full of great inspiration ☺

thanks for all your kind words and encouragemnent! :) This has definitely the most consistent I have ever been with my art, I guess it goes to show you the power of being in a community and how we encourage each other!

Congrats on the well deserved victory, brother! :D Also commented on that winning announcement. Wow! Didn't I tell you that you were going to achieve victory? I know I didn't have a hand in it, but I'm immensely proud of you, man. Truly. The only way from here is up, bud!

When a person finds his true calling, it's pure magic. My friend, this is truly what you're meant to do. Another home run right here. The process video and shots are amazing. I'm always fascinated by them! Two days in a row where you completely impress with your graphite skill. Wow! I imagine you could creat tons of videos just by covering graphite. Jeez I can't wait to even come close to a fraction of your skill!

Wonderful work here! I haven't seen the actual picture, but I feel like this is even more beautiful than it! Truly astounding!

thanks for the support! I'm really glad our paths ended up crossing in such a weird way when i came back to steemit! I'm not sure we had ever even actually talked to each other before I left! I'm definitely looking forward to doing some more in depth videos - should be fun! I'm currently waiting to get verified by gemini so I can try and get my winnings out to help toward that camera. Hopefully it happens soon...

I'm quite we haven't! Otherwise, we would've already hit it off way back then haha!

Gemini? What's that? Fingers crossed the verification comes sooner than later! The camera seems to be the only bottleneck to a deluge of fun new content so hopefully that gets sorted out as soon as possible!

As far as I can tell the only two ways to actually get bitcoin into a US bank account is to use either coinbase or gemini (another exchange); Both places are experiencing high volume and so there is nothing I can do to actually get the $ currently. Plus, now that Bitcoin decided to normalize the value of what I thought I had has decreased significantly, so who knows what will end up happening with that.

Have faith as you HODL, brother. Here in the Philippines there are way lesser options to get BTC converted to Philippine Peso. Here's a list of other services you can try: https://medium.com/krown/top-5-coinbase-alternatives-f5391e13d5d8

I finally got connected through Gemini to my bank account. I'm glad you shared that though as I hadn't heard of many of those other places!
Are you invested in crypto (other than steem/sbd obv)? which coins? any coin in particular you're very bullish on?

Beautiful!

thank you very much! I also love the horse you just posted an hour ago! :)

This is absolutely beautiful!!

Thanks! I will admit I was a bit worried before I started that I would be able to get the hair right, but I think it turned out pretty well (which is saying something that I am willing to admit that since I usually only see errors in my art!).

Seeing your comment reminded me that I need to get back over to the PAL discord; I haven't been there in a while, but the last time I was there I was under the name @allstarrunner, but I have since switched to this new account. Thanks again :)

I noticed that, welcome back and look forward to seeing more of you art and more of you around! Don't be a stranger! Here is the link to come on over! :)
