In this video I talk about an effect of the recent hardfork on engagement.
Many people, including myself, are now rarely upvoting comments, or not at all. The reason I've stopped - at least for now, is that those upvotes are being swept as dust anyway, while lowering my voting power.
I've been focussing more on upvoting actual posts instead.
The down side of this is that I actually really love upvoting valuable comments, because I really value comments, but if they're not reaching the intended target anyway, then that's pointless.
There is a silver lining which I talk about in the video.

Begs a question tho, if we are trying to compete with other social networks that is— on FB, twitter, IG etc ‘likes’ have no monetary value (but we know it provides a nice dopamine hit thanks to data science).
I guess what I’m saying is imo it shouldn’t matter the Steem value or dust, an upvote shows appreciation, acknowledgement and provides a similar dopamine hit. They are good for user retention regardless of the vote value and affects on voting power. Those should be second thought imo

I've been giving some comments a small vote to show I saw them and will vote up a post by that person so they get something. It's a shame this has happened, but change was needed. I can also give !BEER.
Other people are voting on my comments to little effect. I guess it helps my rep at least.
I saw a guy giving all his own comments a 20c, but the anti-abuse people found him. That's so #OldSteem

I've been looking into rewarding valuable comments using other means. Showing my appreciation by summoning token bots, like the Beer bot and @misterengagement. Unfortunatly, both seemed to be down today. Now researching other tokens that can be used as a 'token of appreciation'.
Interesting. I've noticed an increase in people doing that actually - especially with Beer.
Beer is the most known token, but there's also ENGAGE (but there is some trouble with the @misterengagement bot, apparently). Was planning on doing a post about it tomorrow, so I looked into some other options earlier today. There's TipU, of course, and a token called SHADE. Neoxian also has a tip-bot now, and then there is UFM, the token of the UpFundMe tribe, that can also be used for that (although at first sight, it looks pretty expensive. You have to have 5000 tokens staked (=57 Steem) in order to give out 1 tip a day.
That's all that I've found so far
It was actually an idea @glennalbrethsen came up with last week in one of his posts, and I liked it a lot.
The most valuable reward for a comment is a reply, of course, but I like the idea of giving something extra as a sign of appreciation.

Cause I am a huge fan of upvoting comments on my blog...But if it serves no purpose...I mean, do we just run around now and upvote at 1% so people at least see we acknowledged them?
I have always sent @SteemBasicIncome units on certain days of the week when people engage...Which is cool until you get 40 comments a day LOLOL That's a whole lot of Steem to send for comments...
But it's worth it in the end. If I can make my subscribers and readers know they are valued...I've done my job :)

Wasn't the comment section for engagement, finding new connections, networking? I honestly don't get why we do upvote comments because by replying to that comment you already show an appreciation. And not only that, you get genuine people commenting not those that expect to get a reward for it.
I think I have always felt pressured to give an upvote for a comment, thus unable to curate the excellent work Steemians were creating. If the comment upvoting business slowly dies out, I think we will have a better, more robust engagement. What do you think?
