This groupthink behavior is very dangerous, and I believe one of the biggest drawbacks to the nanny state system. Research has shown time and again that decisions made by a group of people are inferior to those made by individuals - and yet we continue to rely on the opinion of the general majority.
In my own life, nearly every time I have gone against the majority I have benefited as a result. This extends from investments, where getting into precious metals, crypto, and "crisis investing" in depressed economies have been tremendously profitable, to permanently leaving the western world and the traditional 9-5 career culture.
