This song is a rather sad song that has quite a profound story to it. This song is about a group of settlers in the 1850's going out to California to mine for gold. They get sick on the way and meet a snake oil salesman who tells them that his tonic can cure their disease. They spend every last penny they have on his cure and end up dying a slow and painful death out in the dessert.
